Toddlers: 24 Months+

average age to pull the binky

I know this is kind of an "all over the place" question but is there an average age to try to wean off the binky? I kind of figure by 3 I will work on it. DS uses it alot for bed and when he's upset but not too bad with it otherwise. Obviously I dont want him to have it when he's 5 or 6 but does 3 sound late?

  • We started at 8 months, took it away during the day just fine but during sleep time was her issue, and were done by 10 months.  We didn't want her to be old enough to remember it and ask for it.

  • Both our pediatric dentist and doctor told us to get rid of them by 12 months.  So, we got rid of DD's at 12 months and DS gave up his on his own at 6 months.

  • We still have it at 2.4 months at night or naps only. He's keeping it for now. I'm sure he won't need it when he's 15, so I'm not that worried. I rushed getting rid of bottle and notice most people keep that longer too... My pediatrician didn't say anything about it. It's great if you can get rid of it early, but I'm in too deep now and I feel so mean just taking it at this point..
  • Our DD just turned 2 and we'd like to get rid of it very soon.  For a long time she only wanted it for naps and bedtime, but lately she wants it more during the day...especially when she gets upset.   Still debating what method we want to use and the drop dead date!

  • DD still has hers at 27 months, but only for bedtime.  She hasn't needed it at daycare since 18 months or a little after.  She knew that once she got into the classroom it goes into her cubby.  At home was a different story until about two weeks ago.  We "lost" it one day and we'd remind her that she lost it whenever she asked for it and we'd help her look for it.  This lasted for about a week.  She only really asked for it at bedtime but we'd give her a stuffed animal instead.  Then we transitioned from her crib to a twin bed and she slept horribly so we gave in and gave her pacifier back.  She only asks for it after bedtime stories and she's ready to sleep so I have no problems with this arrangement until she is ready to give it up.
  • We took a road trip a week after his 1st bday.  The next week, it was gone.  I feel like all my friends who've waited longer have a REALLY hard time getting rid of it.  Ours was no big deal.

  • DS didn't use it past 6 months, he was never that into it.

DD is under 2.5 and still using it for sleep only. We just potty trained in June and are still working on consistency, so we don't want to tackle the binky yet. Probably around the holidays...

  • Bedtime and naps only. Paci "lives" in the crib. That took about 3 days for her to stop asking for it. I also make concession for a car ride over 30 minutes (she is terrible in the car---just hates car rides)

  • DD's magically disappeared right after her 1st birthday.
  • We did it around 18 mo then gave it back at about 2 b/c she was pulling her hair out and eating it, when that habit went away we took nuk away about 27 mo for good.  I wait til they are sick and can't breath through their nose.  They can't use nuk anyway so it makes it a bit easier:)

  • My DS used his all the time until about 7mths then we limited him to bed time use only. He still is using it for bedtime. We are changing him to a twin size bed in about two weeks. Once that's going well we are potty training and then lastly we are going to phase the binky out. Hoping to get it all done before he turns 3.

That's a good idea about waiting until they are sick. Hmmmm...

  • We just took our DD;s about a week ago. The 'paci bird' came and got it at night and left her a note and gift for when she woke up. Honestly, she's only said paci twice since then but let me tell ya - the withdrawals for lack of a better term have been horrible! She too only used it for naps and nighttime, but also got used to using it when she was upset or wanted to relax - and so on. This past week naps have been nonexistant, nighttime has been a one to two hour production of tantrums and crying, and all around her behavior has just been CRAZY. It can't be that much of a coincidence?? I associate it with the paci, and I'm praying it gets better soon. That being said that thing saved us about a million times lol - so although it's been tough I don't regret using it or waiting to take it away. Well, maybe a tad sooner wouldn't have hurt. :)

This is similar for us. She only uses it at bed and naps and she doesn't sleep with it in most of the time. Dentist said it's not affecting her teeth. We are moving her into a bed and potty training in the next few weeks, plus she'll be in a new room at school come September, so I'm not rushing to pull the paci. Hopefully by 3 (she's 2 years, 5 months).

  • we got rid of DD's last summer when she was 15 months old.  It was a rough week or 2, but once it was gone she was totally fine.  I figured it might not be letting her use her words as much and wanted her to talk more.

  • We just got rid of the paci this weekend and DD just turned 2.  I didn't think DD would understand the fairy method.  If it just magically disappeared I know she would constantly ask and I wouldn't know what to say.

The one thing she really understands is "broken".  So, I clipped the tips off all her "babies" (that's what she calls a paci).   She was pretty upset at first, but more in a disappointed way, not a horrible tantrum.   Luckily she napped and went to bed ok....which was shocking!!!   I spoke with her daycare teacher today to make sure they are on the same page and don't give her a paci.  I even gave them a broken one in case she keeps insisting.

  • We pulled in around Memorial Day so we were 2 and 4 months. The transition was pretty smooth (well, smoother than I thought it would be). At that point she only had the binky at night and naps and it was like that for over a year. I think she was ready, which helped.
