What tricks do you use to get DC to fall asleep on their own?

I just finished reading The No Cry Sleep Solution but I didn't love it. I really like the idea behind it (I'm pretty anti CIO and very pro AP) but it didn't really give me any tools to help DD fall asleep on her own. She still needs me to rock her to sleep. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • No tricks, it just takes practice. Does she take a pacifier or have a favorite toy?

  • We have a little routine at night starting with a bath, pj's, book, eat, then I put him in his pnp drowsy.  I pump in the room with him and the noise of the pump usually helps him go to sleep.  I rarely have to pick him up to rock him to sleep.  Do you use any kind of white noise machine?  It really seemed to help DS.

  • I can get Natalie to sleep on her own if I put her musical sea horse in the crib near her. I shove it in between the slats on her crib - and she isn't mobile to the point where she could suffocate on him. She is asleep within minutes.

Audrey, I don't think she'll fall asleep on her own for at least ten more years.

  • So far I have two tricks: my right boob and my left boob......I'm looking for more tricks to put DC to sleep.....

    That works too! Ha!

  • I used to be able to 'shh' and pat his chest and he'd eventually drift off.  Lately, counting in a monotone voice has worked really well - sometimes he's out by 56, and others, by 156, but it usually gets him.  With both methods, as long as he's not crying, I put him down in the crib awake but drowsy.

    haha ? same here!?

  • I started laying down in our bed with him and I put him on his side while patting him gently on the back.  I did this for a few weeks, then I tried just putting him in the same position drowsy on his side and he fell asleep on his own.  Then came the 4 month wakeful  period and we are now starting over.  He will only go to sleep while nursing.

Same here. That and rocking her helps. Other than that she laughs at me when I try to put her in the crib awake, but drowsy. ?

  • I've got the same two tricks as Shauna07.  But, along the same lines as counting in a monotone, I've started singing "99 Bottles of Milk on the Wall."  DS is usually out by the time I get down to 80 bottles of milk.
