NST - what should I expect

Hi - I have to get a NST tomorrow and I'm not sure what to expect. Does it last long? Will they try to keep me there all day? I'm getting nervous and scared and not sure what to expect. I appreciate any feedback.

Re: NST - what should I expect

  • I had them the last month with my 2nd daughter and I actually enjoyed them. Mine were never longer than an hour. They hooked me up to a fetal heart monitor and also a belt to feel contractions, etc. I laid back in the chair and closed my eyes or read a magazine. The hospital was very sweet and even allowed me to bring my older daughter (3yrs at the time). She would color and talk with the nurses while I was there.

It's kind of a nice "time-out" that you have to focus on relaxing. That's your job while you are there :)

  • Thank you! I think I am more scared that I am actually having contractions. I thought they were BH because they are so mild and random but cervix has decreased dramatically over the last 4 days.

I have NSTs twice a week, it shows that I am having contractions but I can't feel them so the doctor isn't concerned.

  • I am having NSTs at least twice a week, sometimes more if the PTL kicks up.  It shows my contractions but even better, it shows that my LO is kickin' butt in there.

They watch me for 30-60 minutes.  You get two straps around your belly, each has a little disk thing on it and one watches your ute and the other your LO.  I also have to push a little button every time I feel my LO move.  I think for them to be happy, she has to move 4 times during the test, but I'm not exactly sure.

Bring a charged phone or ipad.  You'll have some time and it's nice to have a bit of a distraction.  Nothing will hurt, the nurses will make sure you know exactly what is going on. Ask questions if you have them, that's the best way to cure anxiety! You'll do great!
