Feeling guilty (GD)

I have been craving this hood ice cream with fudge swirl and chocolate chunks.. Finally caved tonight and had a scoop. My after dinner number was awesome so I figured wth.. Now I am feeling so guilty! My fasting numbers have been high and I am trying so hard to get them down and I feel like I ruined all that! :(

Re: Feeling guilty (GD)

  • Your fasting numbers are often beyond your control. Many of us have tried everything to bring them down to no avail without meds. So, if it turns out that they won't come down, beating yourself up isn't productive. If your after dinner number was good, I wouldn't necessarily assume that the ice cream messed it up. I would check an hour after eating it just to know, but full fat ice cream does not affect me negatively, in the morning or otherwise.

  • I have had some (limited) success lowering my fasting number by eating 15g carbs whole wheat (toast) and lots of protein (BBQ pork - about 6 generous slices) and sometimes some light string cheese as my night time snack.

It didn't help a lot, but it helped some.

I have been taking 1.25 mg of glyburide since I was diagnosed at 24 weeks. I was prescribed it right away because my fasting for the glucose test was around 100. My numbers went right down to where they wanted them (well under 90). My numbers started creeping up around 32 weeks or so. They never really got over 95, but it was usually between 90 and 95 for a couple weeks. They peaked at about 35 weeks and have been going down since then. Eating the exact same things got me a 77 fasting this morning (I am 39 weeks)! So at least for me, it is true what they say - GD insulin resistance peaks around 36 weeks.

I really don't cheat on the GD diet :-( I am kind of "obsessed". I get very upset about high numbers. I take controlling my GD very seriously. I view it as my baby depending on me to keep it under control. It has helped to remember that it is only for a limited time :-) I was always counting the weeks. Now I am counting the days! :-)

  • I honestly believe it is ok. I "splurge" every once in a while. You didn't go overboard and eat an entire pint and the fat from the ice cream and chocolate should slow down the absorption of sugar. My fasting numbers were where I could not control either. No matter what I ate I was between 95-105. So I am on glyburide at night and it's been fine. I eat the no sugar added butter pecan ice cream every once in a while and add a 100 cal pack of nuts in too for the extra protein. It's never raised my numbers to a high level. I would definitely test after one hour just to see. You don't know how your body will react to things. That is one thing I've learned....what works for one may not work for you. And that's ok, we are all learning.

  • My "recommended" fasting meal was a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some nuts.  I would "cheat" and put a little bit of chocolate syrup on it once in awhile when I thought I couldn't possibly have anymore vanilla ice cream.   People suggested klondike bars, but those didn't work for me and one of the nurses had to kindly recommend I just stick to the vanilla ice cream : )

I think it is honestly okay to allow yourself to cheat- within reason- once in awhile.  The fact that you feel guilty means you won't make it a habit and are taking this seriously.
  • Thanks ladies. My numbers were all fine so I was just freaking out for no reason! I just felt so guilty!! Glad everything turned out OK and I can have a scoop of ice cream every once in a while :) Thanks for your support!

  • have you tested what your numbers are after 2 hours of having the ice cream>? I have ice cream a few times a week and I have fine numbers. I think the protein and the fat help. so you might feel guilty for no reason!:o)
