Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Jumperoo or Exersaucer

Ok, need some input on this.. have several questions so feel free to chime in on anything you can.  Thanks!

- Do I really need one of these?  Scale of 1-10 for necessity/usefulness?

- What age start/finish using one?

- FP Jumperoo, or Evenflo Exersaucer - pros and cons or preference?

- Do they still make those bouncers from when we were kids, where if the baby's feet touch the ground, they can actually walk the jumper, like on wheels?  Or have these fallen out of favor?

Thanks for the input!

Re: Jumperoo or Exersaucer

  • we have a jumperoo, and DD loves it.  She didn't start using it until around 4 months, but it's nice to be able to put her in it and get something done.

  • It's definitely not a need, but mu LO likes it. We got an exersaucer first, but she loves jumping so much that we got a jumperoo and are going to take the exersaucer to the IL's. I believe the ages are 3 or 4 ish months, depending on baby's development, to around a year.

I think you mean a walker...those aren't recommended anymore, and even banned in some countries, like Canada, because of injuries.

  • Do you know if the "lawnmower" style walkers like the V Tech ones have the same negative developmental issues as the other ones?

Like the walk-behind push ones? I wouldn't think so.

  • just got a jumperoo at 5 months for DD-she loves the heck out of it. Of course, these things like bouncers and swings are never a necessity-but they are helpful and from what I hear have a longer shelf life (bouncy seats and swings were great for 1-2 months here before she got over it )

  • - Do I really need one of these?  Scale of 1-10 for necessity/usefulness?

I give it a 10.  Honestly.  My baby loves it, and it's one of the few places she's happy to sit for a few minutes.  I love that she can jump and have music/lights/toys to play with at the same time.
    - What age start/finish using one?

My LO is 12 weeks, and has been "practicing" using hers for a couple of weeks.  I haven't left her in it unsupervised or for very long, but she has great head control... She can't jump yet but it seems to make her happy.  We have the jumperoo, and all she really has to do is wiggle to trigger the music/sounds.  Just in the past day or two, she's started swatting the toys and really loving it.
    - FP Jumperoo, or Evenflo Exersaucer - pros and cons or preference?

We have the jumperoo.  I think they can get more bounce from this than the Exersaucer.  I read a lot of reviews because I couldn't decide either, but I figured I was getting it more for the jump factor than the toys because LO loves to kick.
    - Do they still make those bouncers from when we were kids, where if the baby's feet touch the ground, they can actually walk the jumper, like on wheels?  Or have these fallen out of favor?

Yes, they still make them, but some recommend against them for the stair hazard.  I have one in our basement for her to use when she's big enough (for now, she likes to just sit in it).

If cost is a factor of why you're debating whether one is necessary, I say get a used one!  I got the Jumperoo from Craigslist and paid $40 for it.  I spent an hour scrubbing it from top to bottom, and it's good as brand new.

  • I would actually rate my exersaucer a 10 on a scale of necessity. It helps me to get so much done and J ADORES it. We are on vacation right now and it wouldn't fit in the car. I'm missing it for sure. We almost rented one here for $40.

  • We have the jumperoo... I bought it at a garage sale for only $25 in same as new condition.   Our son loves it he is in it at least once a day and will play, talk, jump for up to an hour.   I love it, like others, because I can get something done.

We had an exersaucer for our daughter many years ago but she hated it.   Between the two I like the jumperoo better.

Our son has been playing in it since he was just a couple months old (he is now 3-1/2 months) , we put either a package of toilet paper or a pillow under his short little legs so he can jump/bounce.

  • I had both for DD1. She preferred the exersaucer. We used it until she was about 9-10 months old, but we were able to use the jumperoo until about 15 months. Now, I only used it at that age to contain and entertain her while I was in the shower. She was walking but couldn't escape the jumperoo.

  • Thanks for all of the input!  I wish I hadn't gotten a Mamaroo...  Through the first 4 months, our son has been pretty "easy" with fussiness and Mamaroo hasn't been used much besides as a place to sit sometimes after a meal to avoid reflux creeping up.  He will sit in it while it swings but it's not like he is entertained by it the way that the activity mat or mobile tickle him pink.  Could have gotten a jumper and some major registry item for the price of this stupid thing!
  • We have an exersaucer a friend gave to us. It's still in the box, but LO's pedi said yesterday that this is a good age to start using it since at 4 months babies love to sit up and look around. So I'll probably get it out of storage this weekend. Not sure if we would have bought one if my friend didn't it give it to us.

I wish we had the mammaroo. I didn't realize how much little one would like her swing. I hate the amount of space that her current swing takes up.

However we still plan to get an exersaucwr as the swing is for sleeping.

  • I have the Baby Einstein Jumperoo back home, I'm dying to get one here at DH's (visiting him in South Korea). DS loves it, he loves the jumping, being able to be upright and look at everything, the music from the buttons and rolling the rattle thing, it just great to leave him there for a bit and get things done. I got it for him when he was 3 months and just put something under his feet so his legs weren't dangling. I bought it at a baby resale store, so worth it. I will probably pay ull price for one out here, which I'm totally ok with. I would call it a necessity ;)

  • Fyi, baby Einstein jumper was recalled.

I have the rainforest jumperoo. Not a necessity, but DD LOVES it. So worth the money just to see DD smile and smile and smile! Plus, it gives me 20min of free time to get stuff done around the house! Now that is priceless! Lol.
