Running at 30 weeks- need advice

I volunteer coach my local areas learn to run group for Moms on the Run- as a group we run around 12-13 minute miles. It's two nights a week and we do interval running for 30 minutes.  This week as an example we are running 10 minutes, walking 1 minute- 3 times through.   As the learn to run coach I time the intervals and encourage the ladies.

I've been having a lot of BH contractions over the past 2 weeks and they really pick up a lot when I run- during and after.  The summer heat doesn't help and now that our interval runs have less walking time I'm not able to walk as often as I feel like I should be.  I do drink a TON of water before, during, and after.

There are 4 weeks left and I hate to back out of a commitment, but the baby does come first.  A week ago my midwife said to continue as long as I feel fine, and I do for the most part, but at the same time I really don't want to cause pre-term labor or any issues with my little girl.  If I did quit I would continue to run weekend mornings on my own when it's cooler out and I can walk as I need to.  I really just need some outside perspective on this...

Thoughts?  What would you do?

Re: Running at 30 weeks- need advice

  • I had similar contraction issues around that time. I spoke with my doctor about it and she said I should stay aware of how long the contractions last following the exercise. If they last a couple hours, I need to check in with her and scale back my activity. I only had one incidence when they lasted far too long and it was a hot and humid day and staying hydrated was almost a losing battle. I am 34w5d and I am still running under a 10 min. mile for 4 mile stretches, but I have to be very careful about running when I won't get too warm and I started wearing a belly support band.

With that said, it doesn't sound like you can adjust the time when you run, but perhaps you could pass the timing responsibilities on to someone else so you are able to walk when/if you need to in order to decrease the BH issue. If not, I don't think anyone would (or should) even blink an eye if you need to hand over your responsibilities for your health and the health of your LO. Best of luck!
