High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and going past 40wks

I have a midwife but have an OB co managing my GD. I am diet controlled. The OB and I meet every 2 weeks and last time we met at 36 weeks, he told me I have great numbers and doesn't need to see me again unless my numbers change. He said he doesn't see any issue with allowing me to go to 41 weeks but not any longer. After reading stories on this board, I am concerned when I see some ladies have the "talk" of induction for them not past 39 weeks even with diet controlled GD. I had an U/S at 36 weeks indicating LO is around 6lbs 6oz-66th percentile and my placenta looks fine. I do not have any other scans scheduled. Should I be concerned if I am approaching 41 weeks and baby isn't here yet? I guess I am just nervous because of potential issues of the placenta deteriorating after 39 wks. Anyone get to 41 wks no problems? I am deathly afraid of stillbirth or something serious happening!

Re: GD and going past 40wks

  • I had my first at 41w1d spontaneously, which is the average for a first gestation. You have much greater odds of a failed induction turned csection than a stillbirth. Are you ok with that possible outcome? Placental issues are indentifiable on u/s, so as long as your are getting extra monitoring, which is pretty standard with GD, you should know how baby is doing. I have GD again abd my edd is in 2 days. We won't talk about induction unless I go over 41w or there is an issue on my weekly BPP.

  • Oh, and to better answer the question, no, neither my son nor I had issues going to 41w1d. He was born 7 lbs. 11 oz. and very healthy. In fact, if I'd been induced at 39w, I seriously doubt he would have been as healthy, and I would likely have ended with a failed induction and csection (which would have made for a very long recovery and impactedd my future birth options). My Bishops score sucked at 39w. Even at 41w1d, I still had a very long, 31 hour labor. I might suggest downloading sone Hypnobabies positive pregnancy affirmations to help with the fear and anxiety you're feeling.

After reading this, i am a little concerned. I have had only one growth scan and everything looked fine. Should I be concerned or question why I'm not having bpps and nsts? Or is it not always done for those controlling with diet?

I was diet controlled with my first and only had additional monitoring after 40w. Because I am AMA this time and on Glyburide, we have been more conservative. If you have concerns, just ask your OB or MFM. Honestly, if everything looks fine, I would not stress yourself. Try to relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Pregnancy affirmations really help me when I feel anxious.

Okay that makes me feel better, thank you! I am going to call my midwife and ask about it tomorrow.

  • Because I am doing so well and everything looks good, my ob is letting me go to 40 weeks.

I have a scheduled c/s because baby is breech, but I would have had an induction around 40 weeks.

I am having weekly u/s and twice weekly NSTs.
