Sushi

I am reading conflicting articles on sushi while pregnant. Some say stay away from all types as contains bacteria and parasites that are harmful to baby; others say it's fine in moderation as long as you stay away from high mercury fish like tuna, swordfish and shark. The most compelling argument that it is ok is that Japanese women eat sushi during their pregnancies without higher rates of negative consequences. I was curious to hear other opinions/experiences. I have not given in to my cravings but they are getting stronger every day!!!

Re: Sushi

  • Check out the post, "I cried at breakfast. In public." There's a discussion going currently. Btw I totally agree with you, but just can't bring myself to chance it.

  • I still have it occasionally. I just make sure its a reputable place. I also avoid high mercury fish.
  • I'm curious to this answer as well as we are meeting friends at a sushi restaurant this week. I'm not a big fish eater and definitely nothing raw! I feel like some sushi should be fine and others more of a concern, and obviously in moderation. I typically get a roll with smoked salmon in it. I googled it the other day and there seemed to be some concerns with listeria. I'll be curious to see others responses and will also check out the breakfast thread.
  • They have lots of sushi that is made with cooked fish. Look for some with tempura.
  • I'm sure it's probably fine as long as its from a reputable place. On the other hand I just stay away from it during pregnancy.

  • I do veggie sushi and anything tempura. I'm afraid to for as fish but that's just me.
  • I think the real concern with sushi is the rawness of it.  My doctor recommending cooking my steak more than usual for the same reason.  If something has bacteria in it, there is nothing to kill it before you eat it.  Also, I have heard that pregnant women are more susceptible to bacteria due to their reduced immune systems.  I love raw fish sushi while not pregnant, but I don't think I'll risk having anything raw now.
  • I went to sushi, although i had california rolls i still felt like i was apart of the group. Lol

  • Freshly made sushi is fine, I have always been told the rice is the biggest concern, I have brought it once this pregnancy first thing in morning while the rice was still warm now the smell makes me ill :(

  • I have eaten it once since finding out. I read the articles too, feeling as though moderation is Jerry.I am also sticking to items with salmon. I go to the doc again tomorrow and figure I will double check.
  • I read about a study done in 2010 or 2011 that stated that the fish that is set aside for sushi restaurants is flash frozen, which kills bacteria as well as cooking it would. Stick to a reputable place you've been to before and still stay away from big game fish due to higher mercury content, but you should be fine with Cali rolls, tempura, salmon, and even eel. FWIW I've been eating sushi on the regular since getting pregnant and haven't had so much as an upset stomach. I still have the article if anyone is interested.

  • I crave it all the time now since I can't stand strong smells, my ob says as long as it is cooked and from a quality place it is fine the other thought she mentioned is if you REALLY want that price of tuna it is a very small amount so it should be fine once in awhile but it is more of a guideline not to eat more than a few peices
  • I'll come clean - I eat sushi - the raw fish kind during pregnancy. DS is perfectly healthy! My doctor said if its a place that you've eaten before and never gotten sick or had an issue then it's fine. So I wouldn't recommend sketchy places or buying it from the supermarket prepared food section if you don't know how long it's been hanging around but I'm happily eating raw fish sushi when I feel like it.

Well...I eat it and I ate it with DD. I do order cooked sushi and it's from a clean place that makes it fresh. I actually had some Saturday night :)

  • I asked doctor last pregnancy and he said as long as it was cooked I was perfectly fine. Shrimp is always my craving and he said as long as you aren't eating it everyday or in unusually large quantities that it was okay.

Ps I gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby!! Already have into my craving this time around also- last Wednesday I had a yummy plate of spicy dancing shrimp sushi :)
  • I always debate this but I've given in 3 times and had a cooked spicy shrimp roll which is cooked shrimp, scallions and spicy sauce. I always order it from the same place I've eaten for years. Today we got there as they were opening (11) & I felt very comfortable as they were just setting up the bar so I'm not really even concerned about cross contamination. Every now and then I have crazy thoughts but I'm probably more likely to get sick eating hamburgers or chicken.
  • Like most people have said, cooked sushi is really no different than eating a meal from any restaurant. Quite frankly, there is risk of food-borne illness from any food, made at home or eaten out.  Obviously dine at a clean, reputable restaurant and avoid fish with high levels of mercury.

    And now I want sushi.

Same here, though this is my first pregnancy. I tend to like the tempura/cooked rolls anyway, but do like some of the rolls with raw salmon on occasion. My doc says it's fine on occasion if from a reputable and high frequency/turnover place that I've always frequented without issue. She also said she'd rather I crave sushi than cheeseburgers. :-)
  • I have had raw sushi a handful of times since we found out in May. The rest of the time I'll have veggie rolls and california rolls. If you're going to a place you've frequented for some time without getting sick, you should be okay. But it's up to you and your comfort level. If you don't want to risk it, then don't.
