Hitting during diaper changes

My 2 yr old doesn't like diaper changes and often kicks or hits during them. Sometimes it it's because he's upset and trying to get us to stop, other times because he thinks it's funny.
He doesn't usually hit at any other time. When he does do something bad, we use timeouts/taking away toys or activities in the moment and it's been really effective.
I've tried a few timeouts once the diaper change is over, it doesn't seem to have an impact.
Tonight DH put him to bed as soon as the diaper change was over b/c of hitting. Usually we play, then read stories. I don't think this punishment will be overly effective because I'm not sure he'll connect the 2 events, even though we both explained why he was going to bed right away. (andplusalso, I kinda feel like bedtime shouldn't be messed with, but I don't know why.)
Any ideas, thoughts, experience? Help us!

 I had to do naked time outs while we were in middle of getting PJ's on. My LO is potty trained so I don't know how well that would work for you. Maybe one less book?

 Going to bed angry or upset bothers me.
