Babies: 6 - 9 Months

So we're using a mesh bumper...

I really didn't want to use one at all, but DD is 8 months and so effing mobile in her crib that she's constantly getting her leg stuck completely through the slats. Just today she's gotten her leg stuck between the back of the crib and the wall 4 times because she walks her feet up the back of her crib and pushes the bumper down. She actually fell asleep that way the other day, which is what prompted me to start watching her over the monitor until she falls asleep. Usually I just check on her periodically.
We're planning on transitioning her from the co-sleeper to her crib soon, but I'm really nervous about her waking up in the middle of the night and getting stuck. She likes to sleep smushed up against the side of wherever she is, and she ends up that way even if I put her down already asleep. Does anyone have any suggestions for something like this? Is there a way to cover the entire back of the crib? I don't know if this is a common thing or not, but I'm really worried because once she gets her little leg in there, it actually takes a bit of force to get it out, so there's no question in my mind that she'd hurt herself pretty badly if she started thrashing to get herself loose.

Sorry this is so long! Thanks!

  • why not put her in a sleepsack? That's what DS sleeps in, for naps and night time. The one time I didn't put him in a sleepsack for his nap, I discovered 10 minutes later (he was still whining) that he not only had his entire leg stuck between the slats, he also managed to take his diaper off!

That's hysterical! A sleep sack is actually a great idea, maybe I'll give that a try. Right now she's only in her crib for naps, so I'll give that a shot tomorrow. I seriously almost had a heart attack today tearing through the house to get to her room when I saw she was stuck!

  • Yeah, DD runs hot, so even in cooler weather she sleeps in a short sleeved onesie and pants. We have one of those air flow sleep sacks that came with a Skip Hop bedding set, it seems pretty nice so we'll try to give that a shot for naptime and see how she does. Thanks!!
  • We got the mesh bumper at 6 months because of the same reason.  But because I wasn't as concerned that LO would "hurt" himself by moving around in the crib so much, I weaved the bumper through every other crib slat and pulled it extremely tight.  When I put it on according to the directions, I hated that it seemed too loose and "fluffy."

  • My DD got her leg stuck three or four times, so badly we had to use Vaseline to grease it up to pull it out, and twice she had a nasty bruise ring. I also invested in a mesh bumper at that point, but like your daughter, she would just pull it down with her leg.

Eventually it just stopped being a problem.

Breathable Baby makes the mesh bumper but they also make a crib shield and it's like the bumper but the shield goes all the way up so she can't pull it down at all. It's great!

  • Love the mesh bumper!  We bought one because our daughter was getting stuck too.  Worth every penny.  Hasn't gotten stuck since!
  • I bought a breathable bumper when DS was about 2 months old because i was worried about all the rummors about the regular bumpers. I had it in his crib for about a month and just put the normal bumper back in. now, he's 7 months and likes to pull himself up when he wakes up from naps, and in the mornings. he can pull the bumper down and sometimes gets his legs stuck, but he'll pull them back out. We tried tucking the bumper down into the sheet so that no matter how far he tries to pull it down he can't pull his feet through it. It's worked so far:)
  • We also went with the mesh bumper. I got tired of DS hanging his arm out to share his pacifiers with our bulldog. I went so far as to hold the bumper to my face doubled over to make sure it would let enough air through. No problems since we put it on 4 months ago! Ours came from target.

Bummer, I just checked, this one doesn't go up high enough. One of the comments mentions something about a product that goes all the way up and over the side. It's just annoying because the back of our crib is SO high.

ETA: Nevermind, it doesn't look it in the picture, but when I checked the height measurement, it definitely looks right. Thanks!!
  • Oh good hope it helps!

  • These posts are SO helpful - my LO got her leg stuck in the crib slats at 5a this morning and I panicked!  I had been looking at the breathable shields but since we hadn't had any real trouble I wasn't rushing...I guess it's now time to place that order!

  • @snoopy4283, we haven't gotten the crib shield yet, but the sleep sacks have been working great. If you have any, give them a try if you haven't already. DD still gets her feet between the slats sometimes, but not far enough that she has trouble getting herself untangled. Putting it on has become a part of her naptime and bedtime ritual, which is nice because we didn't really have a naptime routine before. It's helped me get out of the habit of NTS (mostly). Besides, the way she's been getting tangled is by walking her legs all the way up the side, to the point where she's almost on her shoulders, so I think even with a crib shield, she'd be able to pull it down.
  • I use a mesh crib bumper as well because my DD, who is 6 months, moves A LOT in her sleep, and has gotten an arm stuck before. She still will get herself scrunched up against the bumper, and is a stomach sleeper, so I do worry constantly, but so far she has done well. I definitely do recommend the sleep sacks PP mentioned. They're very helpful, and help ease a bit of worry about the getting stuck thing.
