Cloth Diapering

Wool help

I bought DD some wool shorties to wear at night. She soaks through a triple stuffed diaper (hemp and microfiber) at night so I thought wool might help. I washed and lanolized the wool with the cj's combo wash per the instructions and put her in them for the first time last night. She soaked right through the wool too!

What am I doing wrong?

Re: Wool help

  • Ditto @afwifelife!  When I first lanolized my disana wool soaker I followed the GMD directions to the letter.  After reading some posts here, I lanolized a second time (some wool needs to be lanolized twice to be effective) and used a LOT more lanolin (probably close to a teaspoon) and I let it soak overnight.  It has worked great ever since and we use it every night!  I'm actually going to lanolize our new one tonight so I can start rotating them. :)

Also, on @secondarypulse's point, what do you have her in under the wool?  I use either a TT fitted, Cheeky Cloth fitted or a gmd red edge+hemp doubler+bamboo soaker.

  • We use pocket diapers, kawaii. I use a hemp doubler and two microfiber inserts. I used a ton of that wash, like 1/3 of the bottle. Where can I get just straight lanolin?

The pockets probably aren't enough absorbency. You may want to up the number of hemp doublers. Or ditch the MF all the way. Straight lanolin that I use is the lansinoh brand like what breast feeding moms will use as nipple cream

You can use the lanolin that you would buy for your nipples...in the tube.  You can just squeeze out the amount you need, put it into HOT water in a jar and shake it up until all melted in

  • So I squeeze out the lanolin as then put that into hot water? Any idea what type of a ratio I should use for the water and lanolin? Can I just run the lanolin straight on the wool?

  • From what I've read, you do about a 1.5" line of lanolin, melt it in the hot water, then you canal olive in your bathroom sink. Someone else needs to weigh n though, bc I've just read what people have done...haven't actually done it

  • Is Eucalan a wash? If so, I assume I could use the CJ's again?

I did about an inch line of lanolin.  I turn on the sink and wait until the water gets really hot.  I then turn off the faucet, plug the sink, and put the inch of lanolin in the bottom of the sink (near the stopper).  I then fill up the sink a little with the super hot water (just an inch or two) and use my finger to break up the lanolin.  Then I add 1/2 capful of Eucalan and change the water temp to lukewarm to fill up the rest of the sink.  I continue to swish my hand in there to break up the lanolin using the soap and get the water really soapy.  Make sure the water isn't too hot or you can shrink your soaker.

Let it soak 15-30 minutes (or overnight if you want) then gently squeeze out the water and place soaker between two towels.  Roll up the towel to squeeze out more water.  Let soaker dry completely (mine takes between 18-24 hours).  Then rub the inside with more lanolin.  I put about a 1/2 inch on each side.  When you are done, your soaker should feel slightly sticky.

I do agree you might need some more absorbency.  If you have the ability, I would look into investing in a few fitteds.

Eucalan is a wool wash, that's what I have.  I put my lanolin (1-1.5") into one of my little 2.5oz medela pumping bottles.  I fill it with HOT water and shake it up.  Then when the lanolin is melted, I pour it into my sink full of tepid water.

I agree with @afwifelife's suggestion to pick up 2-3 fitteds (presuming you wash EOD).  I have a couple of twinkie tush that I got in a local b/s/t group on fb for $10 each (only in GUC and had some EBF staining).  I also recently picked up a couple of Cheeky Cloth on etsy based on a rec here and they fit my LO really well!  I wish I had a whole stash of just CC!

  • Can someone explain the difference between pockets and fitteds and why fitteds may be better, please?

  • Don't forget to put some drops of baby shampoo, when you dissolve the lanoline.the way it will help the lanolin to disolve completed. I also suggests,if you are lanolizing only one soaker is better to use a salad bowl, instead of using the sink.that way the amount of water and the lanolin will be correct. Sometimes you need to use more lanolin because of the amount of the water.

Someone led me to these directions, which are super easy to follow (I just soak in lanolin for longer than she does here).  I just use Aveno wash for the wool since I have it in the house and the Lansinoh lanolin because I have tons extra of that from nursing.  Works very well and cost effective.  https://understandinglaura.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-to-lanolize-woolwithout-lanolin.html
