Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Solids..ftm...

What did you start your baby on? Rice cereal? Oatmeal? Fruits? Avacado??? im so confused on what to start him out on.
When did you start your baby on solids? Did you feed him solids after a bottle? How many times a day??? Im a ftm and so confused on this whole solids thing.
Any input would help!
Thanks ladies!

  • I've read you should breast or bottle feed until baby is full first and use solids as practice to begin with.
  • We started DS1 at 6 months and will do the same with DS2 per my own research and the pedi's recommendations. We started DS1 with avocado and will probably do the same with DS2 and then move onto orange & green veg. We eventually did cereal with DS1 (only oatmeal, not rice) but not till he was on 2 or 3 meals a day because it was something easy for DCP to feed him in the mornings.

BM or formula first and solids after, always. BM/formula is the most important thing  until the are a year.

Google "wholesome baby food" and you will get a link to a website that can answer all your questions. We just started our 4 1/2 month old on rice cereal and we do a tablespoon in the morning and a tablespoon in the evening an hour after a bottle. We started because he was increasing his formula amount by a lot and waking up more. Plus he has more than doubled his birth weight and can already sit up. We are planning on giving him either avocado or sweet potato this weekend.

  • Pedi game me go ahead at 4 months but I researched it like crazy and found that they really shouldn't be started until they are showing signs of readiness. Watching you eat, sitting up, etc. every baby is different but I really wanted to make sure he didn't have "open gut" so I waited. He was 6 months and 2 weeks old before he started to show signals. I started him on avacodo and he ate very little solids at first. He just didn't have an interest. Eventually around 8 months he caught on and now eats like a champ. I say don't rush. Solids is actually a pain in the ass once you start. I was excited at first but then realized I was just excited to be at that stage.

  • There's not really a "right" way to do solids. I breastfeed, so for me it was important that DDs nursed first and had solids second. I did purees with DD1 but found out about baby led weaning (BLW) before we started solids with DD2. We'll do BLW with DD3 around 6 months also. I follow the "solids before 1 are just for fun" theory, so while I offered solids, it was never important to me how much they ate. Both DD1 and DD2 were eating 3 meals of table foods only at 1 year.

  • None of my kids would actually eat any solids at 4 mo. I try oatmeal once a week or so until they stop pushing it out with their tongues. Around 5.5 mo the girls would actually eat some food. I skipped rice cereal with DD2 and will with DS. Oatmeal went over so much better. I then moved on to veggies, then fruit.

Like pp said, BM or formula is the main source of nutrition, so offer it first. Any other food is fun practice.

  • We started with rice cereal with B at 4 1/2 months, then moved onto peaches, green beans, apples, sweet potatoes.
K is almost 4 1/2 months and doesn't seem ready, so I'll think about it at 5-6 months.
