Hi gals,
Wondering if anyone else has gestational diabetes that is battling high fasting numbers (95-100, they want me under 95)? My during the day numbers (I test 2hrs after eating) are all under 120 where they need to be but I just cannot get my fasting number down. Feeling really discouraged, meeting with the doctor on Monday of next week but wasn't sure if you ladies had any tips or advice? My after dinner snack has been a cheese stick and some wheat thins.

  • I was actually diabetic before getting pregnant... so I am not sure if its different.  My doctor told me as long as my fasting numbers (morning time) were averaging under 100 then I would be fine.  Being diabetic I struggle with my glucose numbers daily... now that I am pregnant I really try to focus and stop and think what I put in my mouth.  I have to admit.. some days I eat the wrong thing but it can be hard.... I have learned that all carbs (wheat or white) seem to affect my sugar levels... I rarely eat carbs but every now and then it happens.  I eat alot of proteins (meat, eggs, cheese) and veggies.  I even learned that fruit can sky rocket my sugar levels as well which really stinks because I love fruit.. I have cut that out pretty much too.. except if i go to a restaurant I will pick a fruit side instead of fries, etc.  I was actually taking medicine before i got pregnant to control my sugar level.. once i found out I was pregnant they switched me to insulin right away... I really dread taking insulin due to having to give my self shots daily... its very discouraging.. but if it keeps baby safe I am all for it.  I dont really have any suggestions on how to lower your fasting numbers... maybe cut out carbs at night/snacks... Are you taking any medication to help with your sugars?

  • I'm having this issue as well. The fasting numbers are the hardest to control, due to the spike in the middle of the night. That being said, I have noticed that if I include a protein (do NOT get rid of the carbs unless your doc advises it, because that actually helps sustain sugar levels over night, when your body has the hibernation spike) and make sure I sleep enough they are within range. This has been key. Not getting at least 8 hours my numbers are always higher. Getting more than 8 hours and I can have cereal or ice cream as an evening snack and still have great numbers. Additionally, as the pregnancy progresses there will be hormone surges that cause the numbers to spike. And as PP suggested, a walk between dinner and your evening snack might help as well.

Good luck! And stay strong. I'll be seeing my doc as well next week to go over this weeks fasting numbers. She wanted to give it one more week to see if they level out (and assured me that while they ARE above 90, they aren't really all that bad). She said if they continue to be high she will likely put me on glyburide pills once a day to help control the fasting number.

  • Over the past couple of days mine have been in the 98-99 range. but my after meal numbers have been fine, unless I really push the boundaries and don't drink enough water. I have a follow-up appt with the dietitian in 2 weeks, as well as my first appt with the MFM Dr., so I guess I'll see what they have to say about it then? I was actually wondering today if those were high enough to warrant a call if it becomes a pattern.

  • I had 4 days with numbers between 95 - 110 and my doctor scheduled me to come in and starting taking Glyburide at night. All my other numbers are around 110 but that fasting number is just not coming down. I asked the doctor if I should be worried about it being 110 sometimes and she said not to worry because we caught it quickly. She said anytime I had over 50% of readings over the normal range to call her.

    It is incredibly frustrating.
