Ergo Carrier question

My new Ergo finally came in the mail from Zulily, and I am so excited!

I noticed that it is strongly recommended that you purchase an insert for babies under 12 pounds.  I am wondering for those who have used Ergos before, if you think its worth it.  I wouldn't put the baby in the Ergo without the insert before he is 12 pounds as I am assuming that would be unsafe, but I am wondering how much you actually use the Ergo before baby hits 12 pounds anyway.  In my FTM mind, it feels like baby will be that weight before I know it.  I guess my question is, should I go for the insert or is it sort of a waste because I will barely use it?

Re: Ergo Carrier question

  • This is my first time using the Ergo, but I did get the insert.  With DS1 I had a Bjorn, and I started using it when he was around a month old- probably about 8lbs.  I don't remember his weights each month (worst mother ever) but I don't think he hit 12 lbs until he was about three months old.  He was small at birth though, only 5.13.  In short, I think it's worth it to buy the insert but again, I haven't used the Ergo.

  • I plan to use the moby at first and then transition to the ergo. If you dont want to buy the insert, I found this youtube video helpful. It shows you how to use a receiving blanket to hoist the baby up higher until they are bigger.

  • I've heard you can use a receiving blanket too, but I think I've seen the inserts at Target for $25. FWIW I heard the insert could be really warm, so I would factor in temperature with the price and time used.
Temperature wasn't something I had thought of.  That's a good point.  But we will most likely be in AC for the most part (in the beginning I imagine myself using it a lot while I am cooking, cleaning etc around the house), and $25 at Target makes it hart to pass up...

This is what we were thinking, too, and will definitely be using it right away.  I just got my email from zulily that my ergo shipped today! I'm stupid excited!!

  • I have the insert for the ergo as well although I am a FTM so have never used it but my friend is making me a ring sling I plan on using first and mostly while at home and then using the ergo when we go out.

Words out of my mouth. I never used it with DD (preferred wrapping when she was itty bitty), but looked up how to use a blanket/towel instead of the insert anyway. I didn't buy the insert with her and don't plan to this time, either.

  • Just use a rolled blanket, no need for an insert.

  • I purchased the ergo from Zulily too. I got the teething pads there as well. The infant insert I got from ebay cheaper. I plan on using the ergo at the apple orchards in September, the pumpkin patches in October, and on small trips to stores. I decided to get the infant insert since I would be using it quite a bit. There are a lot of places where strollers just don't do well.

  • You may need to swaddle as well as use the "pillow" if you improvise rather than buy the insert. Part of the problem is head control rather than just size; the Ergo doesn't support the head sideways very well. I love it for an older baby (4+ months) but won't use it with my newborn.

Even with the insert do you not personally recommend it for a younger baby?

  • DD was little so we used the insert for quite a while. You can always just sell it afterwards.
