Preemies

Quick Question

My son is 3 weeks old now and born at 35 weeks. ?Already people are pressuring me on when I will be taking him out in public. ?I feel it is too early especially with it being flu season and RSV reason. ?I will stick to my guns on this and wait until I feel ready, but I am just wondering when did you feel safe to take your preemie out? ?

Re: Quick Question

  • We'll see the adoring public in April- the end of RSV season.
  • We stayed in until April.  It's hard, but having a healthy baby makes it worth it.

  • We won't be taking him out until April, and we're so excited about it! ?We will then play it safe again next winter. ?Stick to your guns and trust your instincts...your baby will thank you for it! ?:-) ?Unlike full-termers, outside germs do not strengthen our preemies' immune systems. ?Instead, they hinder them and could potentially cause them to get very very sick. ?Our pedi says that until age 2, ds's lungs and immune system will not match that of a full-termer. ?We're not taking any chances, despite what anyone thinks or says.
  • My DS's middle name is Jameson!

My personal opinion is 3 weeks is too young even for a term baby! Marino got very sick at 6 weeks old once we allowed visitors so we ended up quarantining him completely until he was 4 months. we are still cautious - we only bring him to close friends/family's homes and only have him around small groups of people (no more than 4). We don't allow anyone to kiss him, no touching until I witness hand washing, no holding unless they are wearing fresh clothes.

I can email you the letter we sent to our family and friends about RSV and how to avoid getting Marino sick. Email me at queenbb@hotmail.com.

and follow your gut! We allowed visitors before I felt ready and we ended up with a 14 day stay in the Pediatric ICU!

  • i think it depends. if you dont want to go out then stick to yur guns. with my 35 weeker we went out around 5-6 weeks. i did take her to the mall to get pics done and then it was back home around 4 weeks. with my other dd  (born at 30 weeks) she was in the NICU for almost a month. so she stayed in the house for 2-3 weeks before we took her out. My other dd was in school, so i figured if she was going to get sick she would. but she didnt. she was also born in march at the end of RSV season
  • I guess it depends on what you mean by taking the baby out? I would avoid crowded and enclosed places likes malls and groceries stores, especially during RSV season. But if you mean going to grandma's house? As soon as you feel comfortable =)
  • I took him to the store or to lunch starting at about 4 weeks (which would have been February). He stayed in his carrier and slept the entire time. I was very careful with hand washing and he did not get sick.

  • DS was born last Jan and we did not go anywhere but to the doctor until Easter, even then we were very cautious. I am sure it will be harder since you have a longer wait, but RSV is very serious for a preemie and not at all worth the risk. Stick to your guns. Maybe find some info on RSV and the risks and send it to your friends and family.

  • Thanks so much ladies! ?I knew that you all would understand!! It is hard because everyone seems to think that 35 weeks is not a preemie despite some of the hurdles and difficulties he has had. ?Honestly, my husband doesn't even get it. It is nice to know that I can come here for support!!
