Has anyone had problems with fleas?

I have asked on the pet board on the nest but I figured the more help the better. We recently moved into a rental home that we found out only after the fact was infested with fleas. I have been bitten over 87 times (that was the last count). We have tried foggers and insecticieds with no luck. The foggers seemed to just make them mad because my husband who hadn't been bitten before started getting bite the night we did those. Can anyone please give me some advise? TIA

Re: Has anyone had problems with fleas?

  • wow!  i feel like this is something you need to write up with your apartment manager- it is there job to take care of the problem- they may need to gas the entire building.

  • I would recommend an exterminator!  That many is upsurd and I would definately recommend complaining and getting the landlord to pay for all this.  Fleas are very resiliant and with that many, I think your only option is professional experience.

Also, since fleas lay eggs, you have to come back each month for a second and third treatment to kill all the fleas that have hatched from the eggs the first set of fleas laid.

GL and I hope you get it taken care of!

  • Well it's just a house and they are trying to help but they are old and family. They are going to take whatever we spend off of our rent and they have bought the insecticides that we used. Also they called an exterminator for a past property they had with the same problem and he said that he couldn't do anything that they would have to sprinkle seven dust in the house but I know that would not be safe for me at this point.
  • I am not sure where you live but I had the same problem in my old house. We had to call a pest control company. The only company that worked was Clark Pest Control but I dont know that they service your area so you might want to look them up. They will spray inside and out for fleas. They charged us $40.00 a month and came everyother month. However, if we still had problems after they sprayed they would come back and spray again at no extra charge. Do you have pets? If you do, I had to have mine on Frontline almost consistently the whole time we lived at that property in order to keep the population down. Hope this helps.
  • I would suggest a professional.  After they come in, go around your house monthly with a all surface spray and get them yourself too.

There are four stages of the flea life cycle.  No flea product can kill all four stages.  Unfortunately, this means that not everything will die.  Fleas can be dormant for up to a year.  They will essentially "sleep" and wake up to temperature changes and vibrations (like you walking past them) and then you have the flea infestation again.  IF you have any pets make sure that you keep a good quality flea treatment on them every 30 days.  Revolution has the best efficacy for cats and Comfortis for dogs.  Remember that fleas feed on blood and therefore can cause animals to become anemic if they are infested.

This can be a very expensive venture but you MUST be on top of it.  Fleas reproduce like crazy...I don't know the exact numbers but you can basically be reinfested in days.  Good luck and I hope they go away soon. Smile
