Full Term at 37 weeks?

Okay ladies..I want your opinions on this one. I have heard that the baby is full-term at 37 weeks and should be ready to come to the outside world just fine. (my doctor has told me that anything after 37 is full-term)

I have also heard that anytime from 38-42 weeks is full-term.

So...if you deliver at 37w4d (just a random number I'm choosing)...would you consider that preterm or having a preemie baby?

I'm confused too.  In nursing school full term is 38 weeks anything before that is considered premature.

My doc and everything I have read say 37 weeks is the magic number.

no, not a preemie, it's full term. MOST baby's come out between 38-42. but 37 is still ok (though i still think it's better to bake longer)

Anything after 37 weeks is full term and is not considered premature, though some people seem to think if they deliver anytime before their due date, they have had a preemie. ?But they are wrong!!

I have heard from my doctor that 37 weeks is full term.

My sister delivered 37 weeks and some days.... and my nephew was considered full term NOT preemie...

I think some doctors do consider it it pre term and that is what my paperwork shows about preterm labor that my doctor gave me. However, I have heard some doctors consider it a full term pregnancy at 37 weeks.

Some states say 36 weeks is full term.  37 weeks is the widely accepted time for being full term.

37 wks is full term!  Actually my doctor said 36 wks but I figured 37 is better!  So 37wks 4 days is NOT preemie.

I think if you go into labor naturally anytime after 37 weeks it's considered to be a full term baby.

My doc said 37 to 42 weeks is full term and would consider 37w4d not premature, 36w6d yes. He did say its better if I carry into my 38th or 39th week at least but the baby would be fine at 37.

Anything after 37 is considered full-term. However, some babies lungs are not completely matured at that point. My sister came at 37 weeks and her lungs were very imature...she spent a few months in the NICU...from what I've heard/read, it's pretty rare though...by 37 weeks their lungs "should" be ok...If I had my baby at 37 weeks, I would consider him full term.

It all depends.  Babies cook at different rate.  For some people 36 wks might be done but other babies need until 42 weeks.  That is why I wish they wouldn't give EDD but Estimated Ranges instead.

This is what I find confusing..... When you are 37 weeks you are in your

38th week...So maybe some say 38 because they consider you to be in your 38th week of pregnancy. I don't know! My Dr said they would not try to stop labor after 36 weeks.

According to my doctor and what I have read, at 37 weeks the baby will thrive outside of the womb.

Thanks ladies...that's what I was thinking too.

My SIL had her son at 38w5d and always says that "he was born 10 days early". It just annoys me to no-end for some reason.

She looks at me like I'm stupid when I tell her that I'm technically full-term in another 3.5 weeks and I could technically go anytime after 37 weeks.

Before 34 wks: Premature

35/36 weeks: Pre- Term

37+ weeks: Full term
