Nurse Maids Elbow

My poor ds seems to have this. Yesterday my sister was looking after him. When we got back my sister told me that he hurt his arm. She said that he was holding onto a toy in the backyard and did not want to let go. Meanwhile it was raining and my sister wanted to pull him in from the rain quickly so I guess she yanked his arm a little too hard and caused this. We took him to the emergency room and they confirmed Nurse Maids Elbow. So they proceeded to "fix" it. He still wasn't using his arm afterwards so they xrayed it. No fractures/breaks nothing. The doctor said he was ok and discharged him. We are pissed. We know it is still hurting him and he continues to refuse to use his arm. My dh has taken him to the pediatrician and I guess we will see what they have to say about it. Has anyone else experienced this with their dc? Was there arm ok after a few days or was it something else more serious? My dh said he is not going to pay the emergency room fees as they did not fix our ds's arm. I'm inclined to agree with him.

Re: Nurse Maids Elbow

  • My friend's DD has the same thing.  It's dislocated twice now and both times she's had x-rays and nothing has been broken.

  • If it's basically a dislocated joint like a shoulder, there really isn't much to do other than put it back and send them home.  If it keeps slipping out of joint then he'd need sling to hold it in place, but my guess is that it just still hurts, and probably will for a few days.

  • Wow.  I'd be pissed at my sister for yanking my childs arm that hard.  I think its dumb that you say you wont pay the ER fees...come on now, they did fix his arm as much as possible.
  • DD had this and her doc popped it in and immediately it was as if nothing was ever wrong with it. They did say it could happen again but we've been lucky that it hasn't. Hopefully your pedi can get it back in.

  • It doesn't really take a "hard yank" to injure a nurse maids elbow.  Hers happened when her mom was helping onto the couch by grabbing her arm.

Ditto, DS got it when he was just messing around with my dad.  We took him to the ER where they popped it back in.  It was sore for the rest of the evening but he was good as new the next day.

  • This is very common and with some kids you do not have to yank hard to cause it. As the others have said, it could happen again. He probably isn't using it because it still hurts. They "fixed" it as much as they can. At this point it is just something for you to be aware of to help him avoid. Usually as they grow it becomes less of an issue.
  • You know LeoAGA, I am a little pissed but she is so remorseful. She cried the whole time until we left she felt so guilty. She is still majorly cut up about it so I am not going to make her feel any worse by berating her about it.

My dh just rang to say that the pedi told him that it could still be sore for a few days as it had not been popped back in immediately.
