Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Quick question from an almost 3rd trier...

Do they put a catheter on you when you go into labor or any point when you go to the hospital to deliver?

I sometimes think I am more scared of having a catheter than the delivery.  This is my first baby and I keep thinking of more things every day to freak me out.

Thanks!

  • They put mine in after my epiduural so I did not feel a thing.

  • I had a c/s with a spinal, so yes, I had a catheter.  It really wasnt bad at all. They put it in after I was numb so I didnt feel it at all, and it wasnt bad having it out either. No pain, just felt kind of weird.

  • 1. You can refuse ANY medical procedure.

    2. You def get one with a c-section but can refuse that too...I had 2, it was easy, it goes in after the spinal, it does not hurt coming out, actually felt good coming out and the first pee feels SO good!

  • not that I recall, I think only for c-section/surgery.  I have had hem before, and it's not that bad.  Good luck.
  • I got one after the epi.  You need it because you can't get up to pee.  But I loved it because I was too worn out to get to up to pee anyways.  It is not a big deal at all and I don't remember it hurting one bit.

Carson Henry, born 39w, 2d, via emergency c/s due to no fetal movement and fetal distress.  Seizures, IVH grade 2, brain injury, kidney and liver damage.  Complete blood clot in the artery in his right arm.  27 days in the NICU.  Now discharged from all specialists, excepts his kidney doctor, who will monitor him indefinitely.  My tough little cookie.

  • They put one in me right after my epidural, but took it out when I emptied by bladder. It wasn't that bad at all.

I wish they would have left it in. The first time I pushed, I peed all over the Drs hand =( YAY

    ditto

  • I had a natural vaginal delivery, no need for one.
  • dont think so.  I had an epi and a vaginal delivery.  Don't worry about the catheter the contrax before the epi are what u should worry about...they were HORRIBLE!  But, I do remember having to pee before the epi kicked in and they told me I had to do it in the bed.

  • I was all worried about the cath too. It's not a big deal. I got it after the epi. I didn't feel the nurse put it in. I was shocked when she said "all set"..I had no clue. They took it out when I had to start pushing & I didn't feel that either. If you get the epi you can't walk (for me I couldn't feel anything, it was like I was paralyzed) so you don't want to pee all over yourself. The 1st pee after giving birth is soooo wierd though. It's like a huge release but I was still numb and didn't feel myself peeing on the walk to the bathroom. I peed all over my hosp. room floor LOL. The nurses had to assist me to the toilet. Thank God I didn't pee on their feet.

  • These stories about the cath make me feel better. :) I am not opposed to an epi, so it sounds like I may not even feel the catheter.

Thanks ladies!  Congrats on your beautiful babies!

  • I didnt get one with my first ... but this time around I had to get one after delivering my 2nd DD. I had to pee in a cup when I got to L&D and they said that it looked like i might have a bladder infection and had to do the catheter ... i begged to just oee in a cup but they wouldnt let me after the delievery. It wasnt near as bad as I thought (it was the first time i ever got one) and come to find out I didnt have an infection.?

long story short - *if* you have to get one it wont be a big deal. :D hopefully.?

  • It depends on your labor.  I had a vaginal delivery, and got a catheter after they started the epi (since I couldn't get up to go to the bathroom).  I didn't feel it, and frankly, I was glad they did it because going to the bathroom while having contractions and hooked up to an IV, pitocin, and 2 different monitors wasn't easy.
  • If you have an epidural they will wait until it's kicked in to do this.  I was worried about that to but I didn't feel a thing.
