Caffeine Withdrawals...

Hi everyone, this is my first post on here, however, I have introduced myself in the past. Lurked for quite some time, but officially pregnant and looking forward to posting more. I will re-introduce myself briefly. My name is Andrea, I live in NJ, married a little over a year, conceived beginning of December,?

In any event, I was a HUGE coffee drinker, I still have one cup in the morning (as I hear it's OK) but now, I am suffering with MAJOR migraines. I switched over to Tylenol (used to only take advil) but this is about my 7th migraine since drinking less coffee. Has this ever happened to anyone and will it go away? I don't want to live on Tylenol, but the migraines are unbearable.

Re: Caffeine Withdrawals...

  • i used to drink 3 or 4 soda's a day... i've since cut back to one caffeine free ginger ale a day (if that)....

i can tell you it does get better you just have to stick with it. drink juice or have a cup of decaf or water.

as for the tylenol, my doc says to use motrin if you have headaches...but just like the caffeine you'll have to ween yourself of that as well.

    good luck!

  • It could be caffeine withdrawls and pregnancy headaches. You could up your caffeine intake a bit and try to slowly ween yourself instead of all at once. Maybe you should mention it to your dr. they may be able to prescribe you something.

  • Welcome aboard!  I've been weaning myself off caffine for a while, it's tough stopping cold turkey.  Try 1/2 caff?

I haven't tried that. I am going too. Something has to work. I go back to the DR. on the 5th so I will tell him. Thanks everyone!?

  • Just me, but I would try bumping up your caffeine a bit until your headaches subside so you can take less Tylenol.  Then cut down some more.

Worse comes to, ask your doctor for something stronger for your headaches.  I get migraines, and my doctor prescribed Vicodin for them, its safer than most headache medicine.  It works!

    Good luck!

  • One to two cups of coffee a day is fine. If you continue with the headaches, I would call your OB, maybe they can call in a script. Good Luck.
  • I agree with pp's - I'd start with a higher 'dose' of caffeine and try to wean down more slowly.?
  • I stopped drinking caffeine while TTC, and I had a headache for about a week. But, mine wasn't as bad as a migraine and Tylenol took it away. You could try Excedrin Migraine, which has caffeine in it.

  • i stayed off of soda for the first trimester.  Now that i'm in my second I added a soda in here and there.  Really I can only do sprite and water for so long.  Many a women have drank soda's and coffee throughout their pregnancies and have beautiful babys now

  • How long have you been off caffeine? T hey say after two weeks, you should be good and won't get those head aches anymore but in the mean time, I would talk to your doc about upping th amount of caffeine you are allowing yourself. ::HUGS:: taht doesn't sound fun! :(

Actually Excedrin Migraine has asprin in it, so you probably shouldn't take it. You can take ibuprofen and tylenol, or if it's really bad call your doctor for a prescription of something stronger (I have Tylenol 3 for migraines).

I would def. cut down slowly on caffeine, if you are going through withdrawl your baby is too. I cut back awhile ago, I went from drinking 6ish pops a day to only with meals, then only with dinner, and then I replaced the pop I drink with sprite so no cafffiene.

That being said, I've been told by my doctor that for migraines caffiene can help and I'm okay to drink 200-300 mgs of caffiene a day- equivilent 4-6 regular sodas a day.

  • I'm with you.  I miss coffee so much!  DH and I used to go to Starbucks all the time and now he asks me if I want a Decaf  and it's just not the same :-)
  • It may not be the caffeine causing the migraines.  I get more migraines when PG.  Most women get less but I'm one of the unlucky few.  My OB said aspirin free Exedrine is fine.  I believe it is the tension headache one that is aspirin free.  I drink a little caffeine daily to help with the headaches.
