Anyone who is on birth control other than an IUD?

I would like to start birth control but my doctor was not even willing to discuss it. He said that it would hurt my supply too much and that we will discuss birth control when I am done BF.

My doctor will not go the IUD route he says because of my age and the fact that we would like to have another baby within the next couple of years.

Anyone on birth control find a difference in your supply? I realize that I obsess over my supply, but DS is a big boy and a big eater and I produce only a little more than he needs each day, so I am cutting it kind of close as it is.

TIA!

  • You can take the mini pill and still BF.  I started taking it when my DD was around 2 months old and continued to BF  until she was 1 yr.  It didn't really notice any dip in my supply.  You have be sure to take it about the same time each day for it to be effective birth control.  I am shocked you doctor is not giving you any options.  Lots of people still get pg while BF so it is not the best form of BC out there.  I would see another doctor who considers your needs.

We are using condoms but it is already getting old. We are in no way, shape or form ready for #2 so I know there has to be something out there that I can take. I love my OB but I think he missed the bus on this one.

  • My ob said that the mini pill is a good option and shouldn't hurt your supply like the regular pill would.

  • yes, the mini-pill is what you take when BF. ?you have to take it at the same time every day for it to be effective. ?any slip ups can result in pregnancy. ?i had terrible headaches on the mini-pill (i've had them with other pills as well) so we have to use condoms. ?we sometimes will use lamb skin which are really thin and protect against pregnancy only (not STDs) but they are insanely expensive. ?you should talk to another dr. about all your options. ?there are several to choose from and if your dr. isn't willing to discuss these with you it's time for a new dr.
  • It is very odd that your Dr won't even consider an IUD.  I got my first at 22, and it worked like a dream.  They are less expensive for your health plan than the pill over  along period of time, and they are also very easy to insert and remove.  Not to mention that you are able to get pregnant the instant you have it removed.

I agree that you should seek the advice of another Dr to make sure that your's  is not refusing to explore all appropriate options for your birth control.

  • I'm on Depo Provera - one shot, once every three months. It's a bit of a pain to go into the office, but that's the only downside. My OB/GYN said depo can actually help increase supply.
  • I would talk to another doctor.  An IUD seems perfect for you.  We plan to ttc within 12-18 months, and my doctor thought the IUD would be a great choice.  I really don't know what age has to do with anything.
