1st Trimester

Already Received the Bill!?!

Anyone else receive a bill in the mail for your delivery after your first appointment? Mine just came today for the "delivery/dr" portion of the bill. Do these hospitals REALLY expect you to go ahead and pay them when your only in your first trimester? Seriously...

Re: Already Received the Bill!?!

  • Some places break the entire bill up over the course of the pregnancy so you're not left with a lump payment after the birth. You might be able to ask them to change it, though.

  • I've already paid the portion to my doctor, per their requirements. The hospital part I'd think they'd wait on, in case you have complications. Though I guess they'd just send you another bill for whatever gets tacked on at the time.?

  • Ummm WHAT? Thank god for Canadian Health Care. Never ever ever see a bill!
  • Its probably NOT from your hospital but from your DOCTOR.

I paid upfront with my last pregnancy.

  • As I checked out Monday after my first Dr. appt. I was given a payment plan of $480.00 per month beginning in January. I have to pay them 2400.00 before my 7 month. On the paper they say if a payment is late it will put the whole amount as delinquent and they will not see me for further care! I have a high deductible health insurance plan though. Family deductible is 3000.00 so that still leaves $600 that will be owed to the hospital at time of delivery...
  • As pp mentioned, it's probably from your doctor and has nothing to do with hospital charges - they will charge you separately for using their services once you've delivered.

After my first OB appt I got a letter stating how much the doctor charges for all prenatal appts, the delivery charge, and for an appt after delivery. They break it down into monthly payments beforehand - IMO, if your insurance doesn't cover 100% (or if you have no insurance), this makes it a lot easier than getting one huge bill from the doctor plus your separate hospital bill right after delivery.

  • Wow! Thank God for good Mayo clinic employee insurance...I'd be bummed too!
  • My OB office does this. Luckily my insurance covers 100%. I think it is common practice.
