Night one of toddler bed = disaster!

OMG, last night was horrible. Please tell me it gets better because I'm about to put DS's crib back together even though he would nose dive out of it. After initially getting up 8 times, he then got up throughout the night 3 times and came in our room in the morning too. If your DC gets up throughout the night, what do you do? When we would take him back to his room, he'd scream and cry and was not having it. Ugh...

  • I'm sorry...that stinks!  I wish I knew what to tell you.  The few times he's gotten out of bed I just take him back and tuck him back in.  He doesn't really fight me on it.  Maybe if you lay down on the floor next to the bed until he goes to sleep??

  • Just try and be patient. We have been there. It took DS almost a month to adjust. It got better. The waking up got less and the getting out of the bed got out less. If he came in our room we brought him right back and slept on the floor next to him. It will get better. Just be persistent. He loves his bed now! We had to switch him at 2 because he was throwing himself out of the crib.

  • What I don't get is that he normally sleeps through the night!! WTH?!

  • I remember you posting regarding whether your toddler was ready for a big boy bed b/c he preferred sleeping in your bed... we were having the same issues.  This weekend, we just started letting him cry it out in his crib... which took an hour.  The following night took 1/2 hour.  Last night it was 3 minutes. :)

We, too, had considered taking his crib front off (his crib becomes a toddler daybed) but I also can see that being worse!

  • We've been in toddler bed hell for about a week now. It is very slowly getting better.  We put a gate up in the door of her room.  Now I hear her get up but when she gets to the door she turns around and goes back to her bed.  FWIW, my daughter has always slept through the night except for this past week.  We also got a white noise machine which I think is helping although I'm not sure why.
  • We had to move DS at 2.5 because he started jumping out of the crib.  The first night DS was in a bed (well actually a mattress on the floor) he got out of bed repeatedly for 1.5 hours and we kept taking him back in.  He finally went to sleep and we thought we were good.  He slept for 1.5 hours and then woke up and we did it again.  Slept for 1.5 hours and then back up.  After the 3rd round of this I was literally sitting on his floor in tears.  He would only nap the next day if I laid down with him. This went on for 3 days.  We were in a temp. corporate apartment, DH was travelling the following week, and DS #2 was 8 months.  I had to figure out how to get him to sleep or I was going to loose it.  I ended up putting a child lock on his door so he couldn't get out of his room but I could get in fast in case of emergency.  He screamed for maybe 5 minutes and then went to sleep.  I have a video monitor and literally watched him see the door wouldn't open and then went and got in bed.  I took the lock off a few days later and he doesn't even try to open the door now.  I know some people may not feel comfortable with it, but for me I figured there was no difference between "locking" him in a crib or in a child proofed room.
