Gasping for air while eating

DS has done this from day 1 when I was breastfeeding. I'm bottle feeding now and he still does it. He'll pull himself off the bottle with a mouth full and just gasp for air. I've started pulling the bottle out every couple minutes so he can slow down and swallow and breathe. A couple times today though, he'll gasp and when he finally gets a breath, he starts crying for a second so I think it scares him. I asked the nurse about this when he was a week old and she said this is common and that babies just get to eating fast. Anyone else experience this? It really freaks me out.

Re: Gasping for air while eating

  • Is he not breathing through his nose?

DS sometimes gets ahead of himself eating too fast when I give him a bottle, but it's definitely not every time.

I'd mention it at his 1 month appt.

  • Yeah he breaths through his nose but like you said, sometimes he does get ahead of himself and just chugs chugs chugs. He doesnt do it every feeding but it is often.
  • It sounds pretty normal.  My DS does it only with the bottle because I think the flow is much faster than my letdown (I primarily BF).  My DS is also REALLY impatient, so when I take the bottle out to let him catch his breath he starts to whimper/cry until I put the bottle back in.

  • my son does this, and was also coughing and spitting up milk during feedings.  the pedi said he was eating too fast and too much, and to slow him down and burp him often.   If I see him gasping, I rub his back slowly and that helps.

  • DS did this, but it was because he gets stuffed up in his nose a lot and while feeding that's how they breath. He gets stopped up and gasps for air. Also, do you have a slow flow nipple on the bottle? If I give him the medium it's too fast and he gulps and chokes.

  • DS does this but it happens from his reflux. He also has an airway disorder called laryngomalacia. Does your DC have stridor (noisy breathing?) if so, it may also be laryngomalacia.
  • yes! and it freaks me out too!
  • Yup!  It happens probably every or every other feeding still.  You'd think he'd learn to slow down but noooo.....
