Success after IF

beachbride2007

Her name is Margaret gurkin. She didn't graduate but went there until December 2006. Then she moved to Hawaii and got married in Jan 07.  Did youknow her?

I was curious about spina bifida.  What exactly does it mean? What will it mean for your baby's life?  Sorry I don't know much, I googled but all the medical terminology goes over my head.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Re: beachbride2007

  • Hey girl, i don't think i know her, name doesn't ring a bell, but i may know her face. Basically in a nutshell Spina Bifida means split spine. There are three different types but Carter has the worst kind meaning that there is a place in his spine that the cord comes out of the skin and is not protected by his spinal column. The further down the spine the better, bc the less nerves it affects. My DH explains it as like a strand of christmas lights, when the first one on the strand goes out none of the ones work below it, but if the last one or one at the end goes out than only that one is affected. Carter's is sacral and low lumbar, which is very low so we are thankful. The nerves that his will probably affect are bowel and bladder function(he may have to be catheterized if he doesn't have bladder function, but we hope not) and he will probably be able to walk, but with braces but may also need a wheel chair. If it was further up than he could be paralized or worse, but they don't think thats Carter's case. Hydrocephalus also accompanies Spina Bifida in almost 90% of cases, so he will probably need a shunt to drain excess fluid from his brain to his bladder, but we won't know this until after birth. I will have a scheduled C-Section and he will have surgery within the first 3 days to close his spine and will have to be in the hospital around 10-14 days. They hard part of this is the unknown. Everything they tell us is that this is what "we think will happen or where we think it is", but we really won't know if he will be able to walk until he gets to that stage in his life and so on. There is so much grey area with Spina Bifida. Well I hope this helps, I know I have been rambling, if you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask!! Oh and I forgot to mention that mentally they are usually right on par with their peers, but may have a little trouble with concentrating on certain subjects like math and spelling, so we will just have to work a little harder at those things.  :)
  • Thank you for taking the time to explain it.  I wondered about the wheelchair. Obviously it's all unknown.  Yourlittle boy is going to be so loved! I will be praying for his surgery and for YOU!!! I can't imagine being in your place.. you are a strong woman!
