WWYD? Trashman expects tip?

Our trash collector left us a Christmas card on our trash can, it is signed "Your Trash Man".  I am assuming that we are supposed to leave a Christmas tip/bonus for him.  How much?  Where on earth would i put it?  Also does anyone give tip/gift to mailman?  Again where would you put it?  Can i just make cookies or something?

  • Screw that! I don't know how things work in your town but all of those people are Govt paid in my town. They make more money than I do.

  • This is why I'm glad our townhouse subdivision has giant, communal dumpsters. That is all kinds of shiitty to put a Christmas card on your trash can with an empty envelope.
  • I heard that you were suppossed to give your trashman and recycle guys something, if you want good service.  I was thinking a Dunkin Donuts gift card for like $10, I think it is ridiculous but we didn't give them anything last year and they have been giving us worse service.
  • Put him a card on your dumpster next pick up day. An empty one.

I really do not get the tip everyone idea. If they're a waitress whose income is based on tips, ok. Tipping your mailman, trash guy, and everyone else is ridiculous. They get paychecks.

  • I don't tip either, but my DH delivers the paper and get tips and goodies in the paper tube so I would assume if you did tip the mailman(or leave goodies), leave it in the mailbox...

  • If you don't tip them you don't "get good service"??  WTF?  There is no "service" about it -- their job is to pick up the trash.  That's it.  Period.

  • I think i will do the Dunkin Doughnuts thing, i don't want mean trashmen, lol.
  • They have missed my trash like 6 times this year so THEY GET NOTHING! I do tip the mailman a little something though.

  • You would be surprised about the service thing.  I swear there is a difference in some stuff.  Like now the bag will be too heavy and they won't take it, where as before they would.  My coworker said that since she has been giving gifts to the trashmen they will pick up anything for her even if they aren't really supposed too.  I didn't thing it would matter but I am going to do the gift card thing this year to see if there is truth in it.

  • Tipping trashmen? I have never heard of that. I already help pay their salary w/my water bill each month. (it is included on there) So I would never do it.

And I agree w/the person above....their job is to pick up the trash, that's it.

If you mean they leave trash or dont pick it up when you say bad service, I would report that to the city! Indifferent

  • If my trashmen could put the damn can back where we put it, rather than flinging it into my neighbor's yard, I might even consider sending an email to the City saying how impressed I am by the vast improvement in service.

    Tip them? Hells no.

Do my taxes count as a tip?

  • I tip the mailman but not the trash guys. Never even though about it.
