Too early for a pillow?

My son is 16 months old and I am wondering if it is too early to let him sleep with a pillow in his crib? ?Whenever I go in to check on him at night he always has his blankets up around and under his head and that makes me nervous. ?Maybe I should give him a pillow instead?

My dd has had a pillow since before she was 1, she loves it! She's been walking since she was 9 months so I wasn't worried about her getting stuck or anything like that.
