diaper rash creams? please reply

My mom, an RN, says never to use A&D ointment because its mostly petroleum and can trap bacteria. My MIL says desitin and balmex don't work and that A&D ointment is the only thing she'll put on the baby. Has anyone else heard that the ointment is bad or had problems with other creams?

  • Also a RN, here's what our CWOCN (special wound care and incontinence nurses) recommend for protecting diapered bottoms:

    - Firstline defense changing wet & soiled diapers as soon as possible, gentle cleansing, and a regular moisturizer to protect the skin
    - If the skin gets red then start using a cream with petrolatum (petroleum) to seal in moisture and seal out germies (put it on after a good cleansing)
    - If the rash gets redder and angrier, then make sure the cream has zinc oxide in it (Bordeaux's Butt Paste works miracles!). Also make sure this kind of rash gets lots of time out of diapers & exposed to air
    - If none of these help the rash, get a prescription for a yeast-killing powder or cream

The creams, ointments, lotions out there aren't bad, but they don't always work for what the little tushy needs. I got a creamy formula to use everyday, since there's no need for the petrolatum or zinc if there's no problem.

  • petroleum can trap bacteria but thats really only cause for concern in open skin. when i was working in the pediatric unit, we would mix the zinc oxide bum cream with vasaline (petroleum) for really bad diaper rash. if it was REALLY bad, we didnt put anything on it and left the diaper off to 'dry it out'. in my experience the zinc cream worked great for preventing diaper rash because it kept the moisture off the skin. jmo
  • As a mom of 2 kids already, I HATE destin and only ever recomment A&D ointment. It clears up diaper rash fast! Let the baby go without a diaper as much as possible during a rash either way.
  • i second boudreaux's butt paste!
  • DS never had diaper rash until he was in the hospital getting antibiotics.  We used whatever stuff was in the room we were changing him- Triple Paste if we were out somewhere, Balmex downstairs, Desitin in his room and Resinol in ours...LOL!  Knocked it out in like 2 days and now he's fine.  CDing also makes a big difference.

  • The best thing you can do is to try & prevent diaper rash in the first place. We were lucky with ds & he never had one until after he was a year old & started cutting 5 teeth at once. I use vaseline on his bottom between EVERY change no matter what. Sometimes he still gets diaper rash (we've put it down to certain foods that are acidic like OJ, tomato sauce, etc). When he does get a rash the pedi recommended Balmex & this has worked wonders. I've always been a fan of Desitin (original formula) for overnight diapers b/c it's so thick & doesn't rub off. Also remember that wipes will sting so if your baby gets a rash you should use damp paper towels or a washcloth to clean his or her bum. The best thing is to let DS air out & go around diaper free for awhile...even though he pees everywhere! HTH

  • I like Butt Paste for daily changes, I like Triple Paste and Aquaphor or regular vaseline when she gets red, it stops it in its tracks.
  • I haven't heard anything bad about any. My mom used Destin on us growing up. DS I used Balmex but it never helped with some diaper rashes so now we use Bordeaux's Butt Paste. It works much better.
