Babies: 9 - 12 Months

8 month old and 1 nap a day?

Anyone else with a baby this young only taking 1 nap a day? DD has been a terrible sleeper from the start, but is sloooowly starting to do better. And I should say that she has been a good napper for the last few months. It's just the million night wakings that were the problem.

Anyway, the last week or so, I've noticed that if she takes one long nap mid-day (like 2.5 hours or so) and wakes around 2:30 or so, she won't take another nap before bed. But she is ready for bedtime early--7ish---and last night she was in bed at 6:50. But she slept 9 hours, ate and went back down and I had to wake her at 8 to take DS to preschool. So, in effect she slept something like 13 hours total at night. If she doesn't go down until 8 (even having had 2 naps) she's up 3-4 times, minimally. The one glorious night that she slept 10 hours last week was the same thing; one long nap, early bedtime.

So....anyone else with a a baby around this age only taking one nap? Or is this totally unhealthy? I'm asking b/c DD is going on 2.5 hours of her nap now and I know she won't have time for another one before bed so I guess we'll be doing the same thing tonight. Thoughts?

  • Well, that sounds realy good to me - but my DD is a terrible sleeper too.  Sometimes I get to daycare to pick her up and they tell me she hasn't napped all day - so the first nap she gets is on the car ride home.  Its bad, I know, but I don't know what to do about it.  When I am home with her she naps better, but still not great, usually 1 or 2 45 minute naps.

  • On some days DD will only take one nap.  Then she usually goes to bed early around 7:30 rather than 8:30.  I think she still needs 2 naps because on those days she's much happier and easier to put to bed at night.  She took one long nap this morning and I'm hoping it's about time for another.

  • I would say that it sounds like it may work for you!

I have never been one for DD having to have a nap at a certain time or a certain amount of naps (I'm not saying that this is the way that is best, but it is best for us!)  I tried to put her down for a nap this moning at 10:30 and she was in her crib for 35 minutes without sleeping.  I got her out, and she played until 12:30.  She just woke up from a nap and will probably not have another one until she goes to bed.  She will go to bed about 8-8:30 ish.  And will usually sleep until 7-8 ish.  She will be fine.  I would say if it works for your DD, keep it up.

  • DD dropped down to one nap a day around that time and while it freaked me out at first, it has been so much better in the long run. ?She had been taking 2 or 3 20 minute naps a day but now with only taking one it usually lasts a few hours. ?She started sleeping through the night shortly after too and now averages about 11-12 hours a night without waking.
