umbilical hernia

My baby has an umbilical hernia. He had a stomach ultrasound about a month ago to see if it was incarcerated or strangulated and it showed that it is not. They did say that his bowels protrude into the hernia. Usually I can easily push the hernia in but when I changed his diaper a little while ago and tried to push it in it would not go in. I am going to check again when I change his diaper at 9 but should I call the pediatrician now or do you think I can wait until the morning when they are open.

Re: umbilical hernia

  • Is it red or hot?  These were the warning signs we were told to look out for.
  • I am not sure. I will look at it when I wake him to give him his 9:00 bottle. He is sleeping now and I hate to wake him.

  • If it is, we were told that is a medical emergency, so I wouldn't wait until morning...
  • His hernia now pushes in easily so I am not sure what was going on earlier. I looked at it and it is not red and hot. I will continue to keep an eye on it.

  • Whew!  I'm glad it look ok.  Our dr told us it is very rare for complications to occur, so hopefully it was nothing.
  • If he's straining at all it can be hard to poke back in... like if he's squirming or passing gas or anything..

I just make it a practice to poke robbie's in at every changing. It's starting to get a littel smaller the last few weeks. (it still grosses me out, though!)

  • my dd had one. they told me it would go down before she was one. if it didnt then she wold need to have surgery. it went down long before she turned one.  good luck.
