Am I Overreacting?

MIL is a crazy woman.  But that's really beside the point.  Long story short she is living with her FIL (they are divorced) because she recently broke up with her bf.  She is somewhat blind- like she can see colors and such but can't drive or read and she is in failing health.  I'm just getting super annoyed because she keeps calling us and asking us to take her places.  Which I know that sounds horrible, but it is a 45-55 minute drive one way.  She wants dh to come take her to the bank tomorrow because FIL is out of town for the weekend.  Am I being a total btch or does that seem pointless when FIL said he can take her Monday?  She said that she just doesn't like going to the bank on weekdays, so it's not like she needs to pay a bill or get groceries or anything.

Re: Am I Overreacting?

  • Let me get this straight.... She wants you guys to drive a minimum of an hour and a half to take her to the bank because she doesn't LIKE to go on weekdays? That's just stupid. I mean, if you lived next door it would be one thing, but geez.

Ditto. I'm from a relatively small town in the midwest w/o public transportation and even we had a 'Dial a Ride' service for seniors in your MIL's position. It was a little mini-bus, like a hotel shuttle bus, but it almost operated like a taxi: the senior citizens could call and schedule their pickup and the driver would come right to their address, no waiting at a bus stop. On the other hand, if she does have access to other transportation, there may be other reasons that your MIL is insisting that she needs rides from you guys (loneliness, fear of losing control, who knows...)?

  • Does she always ask people to do things like this for her? Maybe she's lonely and wants company, especially since she just broke up with her bf.

Agreed. There's GOTTA be something this this around. We have them here in BFE where I live, lol.

Good idea.  ANd not just for seniors, but for blind/disabled.

Maybe she's just lonely, but if you don't draw the line with ridiculous requests, they will become more ridiculous and more frequent.

  • I would draw the line with her. She is disabled and she is family so you should help her out BUT you need to have limits. I would think that the best solution is for DH to have a weekly "date" with her where he helps her run her errands or whatever. That way it is scheduled. She has her time and your guys have yours.
