Re: Is 20 months too little for a toddler bed???

  • My nephew went into a toddler bed at 20 months. It was a bit of a transition, though. They have to be ready for it.

  • personal experience - no. our last placement was in a twin bed with a safety rail for 6 weeks and was promptly put in a crib when i spent 3 hours trying to get him to go sleep after he figure out how to get out of it.

our almost 3 year old is being 'retrained' with a crib set up because she was keeping the older child up at night by getting out of bed as a toddler bed.

  • Some kids are ready that young, but it seems that most don't go into a toddler bed until they are 2 or 3.
  • It really is a child by child basis.  My older son was in a toddler bed pior to 20 months (with the rails we bought them at target).  He loved it.  We put it in the same room with his crib (which you could turn into a toddler bed but we needed it for our other son and the babies to come).  At some point your child will sleep in the toddler bed.  Why not put it in the room now and give it a try, if it does not work, no big deal, just leave it in.  We started our son in the toddler bed at nap time only at first.  Then he became comfortable with it and then we started night time.  Good luck!

  • Our pediatrician recommends keeping them in a crib as long as you can (as long as it's safe), he said shoot for age 3. However, if the child is climbing out and could injure themselves in some way, go ahead and switch them over. Our twins are exceptionally tall so I have expected them to try to get out by now (they are 23 months today), but they both enjoy their cribs. When they are ready, we will go strait to a twin bed and skip the toddler bed.
