In the mornings, DD will run to the fridge & say "Juice", and I will give her the option of milk or juice & she might change her answer. Sometimes if she's being demanding I ask her to say "please", sometimes she'll say it, other times she won't.
I've tried asking her to show me where the dog is. If it's something she knows, she will point to it & make the sound, but no luck if she doesn't know the word. In walmart, she sees the fish tanks a mile away & will make a fishy face & point & say fish.
She uses the words she knows almost everyday, but if it's a new word or a word like "shoe", then she will only say it while we are doing that activity of putting her shoes on.
In my own personal side-by-side comparison experience, BIG difference here between girls & boys! ?
Ds will sometimes say a word if I ask him to, but usually just sits there & either stares blankly at me, pretends he doesn't hear me, or tries to distract me w/something else. ?This was true at 18m & is still true now, although he does say the word more often now than at 18m...still it's "when he wants to" it seems. ?Dd, on the other hand, is so eager to talk. ?She replies in a millisecond. ?She answers ds's questions for him b/c she just can't help it! ?(Contributing, no doubt, to his reluctance to say much.) ?It is much, MUCH harder to prompt ds to say words than it is to prompt dd to say words. ?
Ds definitely does & did at 18m too, but again, is not as eager to do it as dd & doesn't do it as frequently. ?More often, he will point to things himself & name them. ?If I point to them, it's hit or miss whether he'll name them for me or not. ?This is the same as for 18m...now there are just more things that he can name b/c his vocab has increased.
At 18m & now, he said/says most of his words every day. ?Again, when/if he feels like it, LOL! ?He's gotten increasingly more talkative in the past 1-2m.
Also, I have better luck w/ds if I just keep repeatedly using a word casually. ?Then, he'll suddenly just spontaneously say it. ?Most of his new words happen like that, & it's something that's started up w/in the last 1-2m. "Bib" is a prime example. ?I've always talked about putting his bib on for meals, putting his "drool bib" on the rest of the day, etc. ?After all this time, he just one day pointed at his bib & said "bib". ?Earlier this week, he grabbed one of our kitchen chairs & said "chair", then ran into the living room & pointed at every chair in the room, saying "chair" "chair". ?I have no idea what prompted this, but I've been saying chair to him every day in some context for his entire life...why this particular moment...who knows?
Does your DC say a word if you ask him to say it? Sometimes, but not always, depends on his mood.
Does your DC point to pictures in a book if you ask him to? Most of the time, yes.
Does your child use most of his or her words everyday or just whenever? Depends on the word. Some words he uses every day. Others he only uses when the situation presents itself to use that word. LIke he only says bubbles when he actually sees bubbles or something that makes bubbles.
At this age, i also find he understands WAY more words than he actually says. If i say where is the clock, he points to it. If i say go get me a diaper, he walks to the diaper basket and brings it to me. If i say hand me the phone, he goes and picks it up and gives it to me.
Does your DC say a word if you ask him to say it? Usually - he is getting better about it, especially if it is a word he knows (like, if I say "say please first", he will then say "please"). If I am trying to have him say a new word, sometimes he tries, sometimes he doesn't. It depends
Does your DC point to pictures in a book if you ask him to? Usually - sometimes he is too distracted.
Does your child use most of his or her words everyday or just whenever? He says about 10 words every day at least, and then throws in other ones depending on what he sees.

Usually, but not always.
Does your DC point to pictures in a book if you ask him to?
You mean like if we say "where's the doggie?" does she point to the dog? If so, yes, she does.
Does your child use most of his or her words everyday or just whenever?
There are certain words she uses everyday, I'd say 10-15 (Daddy, bite, wawa, doggy, up, etc.). Others she just uses whenever.

Ds will sometimes say a word if I ask him. Juice is his big word right now and he will say it if I ask him several tries. Just any word?? No.
He will point to pictures if he knows what they are, he doesn't always know everything in his books yet.
I would say he uses his words everday or at least most days, but he only has a few words.
