No, I didn't!   I was so busy all day...

Oh, I understand that he's paying with cash or CC and it's not your account paying for it.  But what I was saying is that depending on how you guys are on the title, he will be legally able to force you guys to pay him back for improvments he made (even without your authorization) if you were to sell the house outright or something like that.  So if he puts $10K into the house and you sell, you guys might owe him $5K of equity depending on your state laws and your agreement.  That's what you have to be careful of.

I don't know your dad and I'm not saying he would screw you on a sale, but if you are trying to get out, you ALL need to stop making improvements to the property, see a lawyer about the conditions of the joint title and the money that's been spent so far, and determine your options.

Thank you so much for your advice. I would like to say he wouldn't do that. After my mom passed away he was giving her insurance money out left and right.

Also, how do I put this? He's not smart enough to get a lawyer himself. I don't think he would even think that legally he may be able to make us pay for anything. I don't like talking about him that way, but it really is the truth.

I am going to talk to DH tonight to see what we can come up with. I really would just like my family back. KWIM?

I'm glad you feel like he wouldn't be vindictive.  My only concern is that if you guys start fighting and your BIL gets involved as an advocate for your dad, gets a lawyer, and makes a mess for you guys that you need to be prepared.  Expect the unexpected! 

I think you deserve your family back as well, all of that would stress me out to no end.
