Would you give a sick (vomiting) child Motrin?

Miles is running a fever now, too, but I'm afraid the motrin might make him vomit more. It's a low grade fever (100.7). WWYD?

  • No. You don't need to treat a fever that's just slightly elevated. The medicine is likely to just increase the nausea. Try wiping him down with a cool cloth if he seems uncomfortable.

  • Definitely not.

I wouldn't give him anything, to be honest.

  • Yes, I would, Its a fever reducer as well as a pain reliever. It can only help.
  • not if its low grade....however you can ask your pharmasist for tylenol suppositories so you dont run the risk of him throwing up the motrin.  Plus its not a good idea to give a vomiting child asprin or motrin.

  • ditto the tylenol suppositories.

But for that low of a fever, i think I would do cold wash clothes.

I wouldn't give ANYTHING..not even water to my kid who is vomiting, until they haven't vomited for an hour..then only sips of pedialyte...motrin on an empty stomach makes me vomit....on a sick stomach I can only imagine.

  • I wouldn't.  1. it might upset his stomach even more, and 2. he'd probably barf it up before it could do any good anyway.

I'd just push liquids & snuggle.

  • Check with your pedi, but I wouldn't for that low grade of a temp.  I believe the general rule of thumb is nothing by mouth until the vomiting stops.
