2nd Trimester

the diaper decision

My husband and I brought up the question of cloth vs. disposable diapers the other night. I think initially we both just assumed we'd use disposable, but now I'm wondering...

Anyone using cloth diapers or planning on using them? I'm interested to hear your experiences and the difference in cost.

I've read the pros and cons of both and even thought about a mix of both cloth and disp.

Re: the diaper decision

  • This will be my first baby, but we are planning to definitely use cloth. I just can't justify the environmental costs and the health costs with disposables. However, I know DH's family and a lot of daycares don't use cloth so there will be times when we use disp.

  • I plan to use cloth diapers, not for being all "green" and "crunchy" but for more personal reasons -- DH and I both have sensitive skin, and I and all four of my siblings were cloth diapered because of sensitive skin issues.

I'd recommend you go over to the Eco-Friendly board for some help with this - the ladies there are fab.

  • I CD and love it!  It's so easy.  And it saves us so much money.

I've written about it in my blog (link in siggy) if you are interested.

  • At first I thought we would use disposables, but since doing some more research and hearing other people's experiences on these boards I think we might go with cloth.  We are trying to see if we can afford to have a nanny instead of a daycare so that should take care of that problem.  Now I just have to figure out what kind to get.

  • We used a mix of cloth and disposable with Nora, and we will be doing the same with this baby (cloth at home, disposables for day trips).

As far as price difference goes, it depends on how you approach CDing. Some people treat it as almost a hobby and spend lots of money "collecting" cute, fancy diapers. Some people just get the bare minimum. Either way it should still be cheaper than using just disposables, especially if you will be using the same diapers on more than one child.

I agree that the ladies on the EFF Board are a fantastic resource, and they never flame for repetitive CD questions. Big Smile

  • We had the same discussion.  We just assumed we'd use disposables, until we looked into the cloth diapers.  Right now we're planning on using cloth diapers (the bumgenis 3.0) and have a stash of disposables for use at grandma's etc...
  • now im stressing about this. I dont know. I havent done research on this bc I just figured, we dont have a washing machine and I wouldnt be able to keep up with the cloth. After hearing everyone say after research they are going with cloth Im confused.....guess ill be researching this for a while.

  • We're planning on using cloth.

The chemicals in disposables are horrifying and it concerns me to have them right up against a baby's skin (and right on their pieces parts!).

It's more money at the start but saves money in the long run ... especially because we intend to have at least one more child after this one.

The benefit to the environment is also a huge plus.

  • We are going to be using cloth. It makes more sense to me and I will be staying at home for a least 6 months with the baby. I have a cloth diaper registry online along with the target registry. I think that will help some. My MIL has already said, I will not stick with it, but that only makes me do it more. My mom is behind me after she saw how freaking adorable they can be. For money reasons we will be doing prefolds and thirsties, with some BG's (or other all in ones) for when the family babysits.

Also since we plan on having more then one child, we can reuse some of the cloth diapers for the next child and it really saves on money!

  • we were going to go with cloth, but now that we're having 2 we can't really afford the up front cost to cloth diaper 2. ?I really wanted to use them for our 1st then 2nd child not all at one (c:
