Help solve this debate...

Last night, when I went over to Juliana's crib for her middle of the night feeding, I found that she had worked herself over to the side of the crib with her head against the bumper (with a swaddle on).  DH found her like that again first thing this morning.  I'm think that maybe we should remove the bumper because I don't want her to get caught against the bumper and not be able to breathe (though she has good head control).  DH thinks that it would be worse if she hits her head against the side of the crib without the bumper.  What do you think?  Maybe I should get a breathable bumper, but what should I do in the meantime?

Re: Help solve this debate...

  • I personally would remove the bumper... (I never put mine on).  SIDS scares the crap out of me.  When they were in the NICU they pounded it into your head the dangers of SIDS and bumpers were a big no no.

  • I would take the bumper off.  I've been wondering the same thing with Sophia because she will work her way to the rails and either gets her arm through the rail or bumps her head on the side.  I tried to put the bumper pads on the other day and took them back off because I'm afraid of the same thing you are.  I heard the breathable bumpers only really keep them from getting their arms through but really don't keep them from hitting their head on the rails.  I could be wrong though, I didn't go check them out in person.

  • We have always used the bumper, however Natalie never rolled while swaddled.  My first option would be to try to stop using the swaddle because it sounds like she wants more freedom in the crib..lol.  Natalie is all over the place in her crib and many times laying very similar however she always has her head in a position that you can hear her breathing.  Whatever you decide, you have to be the most comfortable with!
  • I never used the regular bumper - to me, I'd rather he got a bump to the head rather than die of SIDS. We did get a breathable bumper when he started getting his limbs stuck in the rails though.
  • At that age, I would remove the bumper.  I agree that I would rather see a bump than anything else.  Maybe get breathable one for now?
  • I agree...remove the bumper and deal with a couple of bumps on the head.

Me too.  We never bought or used one.
