Pitocin

I've been reading quite a few of the beautiful birth stories on this board and I have noticed that quite a few had pitocin either to induce or to quicken the labor.

I was wondering if having pitocin was your choice or if it was given to you without verbal consent.

I was induced because I was having liver difficulties, and baby was not doing well on NSTs, and the pitocin was started after my water was broken, and no contractions began. It was not my choice, but I did give consent. It was better than a section.

I was induced with cervidil on a Sunday evening and it only got me to a 1 by 5 the next morning.  They started the pit around 7 am on Monday and it only got me to a 2 by about 9:30 and then, they broke my water and that's when things really got going.

I was given Pitocin after I hit 7cm and my labor stalled.

I can't imagine someone getting pitocin without their knowledge or consent, that would actually be against the law (here in Canada anyways). I am an L&D nurse and while we may at times give it to pt's who are not thrilled about it they at least have to agree to it. Its your bosy & your in control of it, unless of course for soem reason you were unable to make a decision, which is usually not the case in L&D,

I wasn't really a candidate for cervadil since my cervix was already pretty much ready.  I had the pit first, then my doc broke my water.  After that, things sped up pretty quickly.  The nurses discussed everything they were giving me before they administered it, so I was informed and consented.

I was givin Pitocin to quicken my labor and to regulate my contractions. I think they told me they were starting it but not asked, however I wish I had told them I did not want it. After they started the pit, my babies heart rate kept dropping too low and the doctor almost did a c-section 4 times before they turned it off. A couple hours later my beautiful boy was born after only pushing for 3 minutes. Turned out the cord was around his neck (which apparently 1 in 3 babies cord is) and the pitocin made my contractions too strong and too close together and literally choked him. Next time no pitocin for me, I would rather have a c-section than risk anything happening!

My water broke at 10 am on Sunday, went to the hospital at 3 pm, got cervadil at 7 p.m. and started pit at 10 a.m. Monday after no meaningful conrtax. I refused it multiple times before we decided to start it.

Mine was a forced choice.  I started labor early morning on 12/30.  I had my 41 week appointment with the dumba$$ OB at 10a on 12/31.  I usually saw a midwife but had to see the OB because I was overdue.  Contrax had been 5-7 minutes apart for most of the day+ that I labored at home.  I got sent to L&D for monitoring and likely to be admitted.  The contrax were still consistent but I wasn't progressing so I was told I had to start pitocin if I wanted to stay at the hospital.  At this point, contrax were about every 5 minutes and stopped me in my tracks from the pain.  Heading home just to turn around (45-60 minute drive each way in a really bad wind storm) wasn't appealing and neither was trying to "go have dinner and relax" as they suggested.  So, I took the pitocin.
