2nd Trimester

when did you start needing maternity clothes?

Sorry if this has been asked recently (I can't see past threads), but to those of you who've gotten so far, when did you start wearing maternity clothes?

I know it differs for each person, but I'm trying to get some idea whether or not I should take advantage of holiday sales to get winter stuff, or if maybe I won't need much winter stuff because I won't really start getting bigger until later in the year...

Thanks for any advice!!

Re: when did you start needing maternity clothes?

  • I'm at 24w and I'm still waiting to be in the adorable maternity clothes I bought at the start of this pregnancy.

I'm very tall and have a long torso, so my answer is going to be much different than others.

  • 16 weeks. Didn't "NEED" them but the comfort level wearing them at that time was too nice to pass up!

  • i needed new bras about a month ago but jeans within the last 2 weeks
  • I got my 1st maternity clothes almost 2 weeks ago.  It was mostly the pants that I needed and a few days after that, I seemed to have "popped", but I am overweight to begin with, so I knew it would take me a while.
  • 17-18w was starting the "need". Before that they were comfy. Now there's no mistake that I need them.
  • I'm short with a short torso and I need to start wearing maternity pants now, I'm just hoping to get some stuff for Christmas so I'm sticking it out with the bella band.  I've used a few of my tops from ON but the tops I bought at target are still really big.  I look pretty silly in most of my old tops now because they were mostly on the tighter side to begin with.

  • Right around 19 weeks...Mum took me out to OLD NAVY and we had a blast...its fun knowing that I still have room to grow into them too!! They have cute pants and sweaters-not crazy abotu cotton shirts so just bought some long sleeve ones in LArge... I'm thinking I should take up the holiday sales too but not sure what size to buy med or large???

  • I'm pretty short- 5'3", so the shirts are pretty long/big on me. However, today was the first day I couldn't button the last pair of non-maternity pants I've been wearing. Looks like I'll be buying more maternity pants in the near future.
  • pre pregnancy I was a size 2 so any weight gain went right to my belly and I had to switch to mat pants by 14 1/2 weeks.  They don't make mat pants in xs that I have foudn yet so they are still big on me even now but at least I"m not sitting at my desk in pain!  Everyone is so different it's really hard to tell.

I would say get at least a few pairs of pants because you'll eventually need them anyway.

I should add I was pretty sick until about 20 weeks, so I lost about 10 lbs because of the m/s

  • 14 weeks I switched to maternity pants - they are so comfy!! I just started wearing true maternity shirts about 3 weeks ago... it was a little before Thanksgiving.
  • I started growing out of my pants at 14 weeks and needed maternity by 16 weeks.  My advice would be not to buy pants until you need them.  I made the mistake of buying a bunch of underbelly style before needing them and realizing later on that full panel fit me so much better.  Also don't buy anything too thick because I am freakishly hot all of the time.

Be nice.  She didn't say she needed them, she was just looking to stock up because of sales.

  • Thanks, Sniffer.  That's exactly where I am, and what I'm doing.

And thanks to the rest of you, too!  I think I'll hold off, since it sounds like I have a couple of months yet.

  • 14-15 weeks needed the pants.  I felt awkward doing the whole rubber band trick.  I felt like I was walking around with my pant unzipped for the world to see.
  • 17 weeks for pants.  Around 21-22 weeks I could start wearing the shirts without looking stupid.
  • By 14 weeks most of my pants were annoyingly uncomfortable. Skirts still go on, but they hang funny, which kind of bothers me. So I am wearing mostly all maternity pants now at 15 weeks. Most of my shirts, esp sweaters,  are still fine.
  • I'm relatively short at 5'4", but I'm at 19w now and do not see the need for maternity clothes anytime soon.

  • I'm still in regular clothes. With my first I just went up a size in pants and shirts and so far I'm on the same track.
  • By 12 weeks, many of my work/dress pants were a real problem.  If I had one thing to do over again, I would have bought a bella band early so that I had it when my work pants stopped fitting.

I'm in maternity pants some of the time at 15 weeks, but I can still make work pants work with the band.  I'm wearing some maternity dress shirts and casual shirts at this point, but some regular stuff still fits.

My winter coat still fits, if that helps.  I'm 5'3" and I was 127 pre pregnancy.  I actually have a longish torso for my height.

  • my jeans started getting very uncomfortable around 12/13 weeks. i tried the band thing for like a week but it just pissed me off so i got a few pairs of the secret fit belly pants. much more comfortable. still waiting to wear the shirts for the most part. i have a few i'm wearing. i really like the form fitting ones that show cute little bellies

  • My pants are starting to get tighter but I am not needing maternity clothes yet.  I've gained about 4-5 lbs so far.  But this is something that varies from person to person... everyone is different, you may need them earlier, you may not them until later.

  • I couldn't fit into my pants at 14 weeks.  I could have used a bella band but didn't.  My hips spread early -which apparently is common for the women in my family so maternity pants were more comfortable.

  • I started wearing maternity pants at 14/15 weeks. I don't technically NEED them but they are so much more comfortable than my regular pants. I was 111 lbs before getting pregnant and a size 2 or 4, so all the weight I have gained has gone to my belly and made all my pants too snug. The maternity pants I did buy are a little big, but I know I will grow into them.
