3rd Trimester

Friend having a version today

I hope everything goes well! Her baby has been breech for awhile. Today they are going to try to turn the baby. My friend is terrified and does not want to have to do it. She wanted to wait to see if baby would turn by herself. What exactly do they do for this? Is it painful?

Re: Friend having a version today

  • They try to manually turn the breech baby into the head down position.  If she is far enough along for them to do it chances are the baby wouldn't turn on its own anyway and she'd need a c/s.

They usually give the mom pain meds or an epidural since 1) they may need to do an emergency c/s if somethign goes wrong and 2) it relaxes the muscles so it works better. But i'm sure it hurts like crazy if you aren't medicated.

  • If she doesn't want it, why are they doing it?  I had a friend do it as well.  She had to see every doctor in her practice to get one to agree to do it, then she did it over the objections of her H.  I did some research then and it really seems like there are many more reasons not to do it than to do it.  Unless her doc is anti-c-section, why would he/she do it?
  • I saw a girl on the baby story have her baby turned the other day, it looked painful, she was crying her eyes out, the Dr. basically uses his fists to push into the belly to try to tun the baby around...didn't look easy to me and after he did it, the baby's heart rate went down realy low so they had to deliver the baby.

I wish your friend lots of luck and hope for a successful turning for the baby.

  • I'm not sure what a "version" is, but from what I know about the doctors trying to turn the baby is, they will palpitate her abdomen and try to get the baby to move.  I have heard it hurts like hell, but sometimes it does work.  I'm crossing my fingers for your friend!
  • i've heard it is VERY painful :( ?i hope it works for her after all that pain b/c i've heard it also only has a very small chance of success.
  • I'm not quite sure why they are making her do it. Either way I am nervous for her now! I didn't know there could be complications where she'd need to deliver the baby. Poor thing.
  • my dr doesn't do versions because it is very painful, and a waste of anesthesia- the baby has a good chance of flipping right back anyway.
  • It's basically a last ditch effort to avoid a c/s for breech baby. I do know 2 people that have had successful ones with no issues so they can work.
