Short Term Disability

I run my own business and am the breadwinner. My husband and I are going to start trying this month to conceive. Does anyone know anything about short term insurance since I don't have maternity leave?

Re: Short Term Disability

  • You can get STD insurance but you have to have had the policy for 1 year before they will pay benefits.  So if you are TTC now it wouldn't cover you in 9 months but if you wait 3 months and then TTC by the time the baby comes you will have had the policy for 1 year.  But then again I don't think individual STD policies pay all that well, you might be better off just saving $ every month.

  • I was going to say exactly what pp did.
  • ditto the others, although mine does pay pretty well. I have it through work though.

  • I would look into how much you would pay in premiums in the next year vs how much you would receive in benefits for 12 weeks of maternity leave. You might be better off, just putting the money into savings to supplement your income while you are out.
