Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Am I a freak?

I'm sure the answer is yes in most cases, but I'm wondering about birth experiences specifically. I was talking to my yoga instructor (who is a licensed doula) about giving birth to DD and when I told her I had pitocin and no pain meds her mouth dropped. I was in labour on my own for 18 hours and I finally agreed to a low dose of pitocin to help with the contractions, but I never had an epidural or any pain medications for the 3 hours after they started the pitocin. So I was pain med-free for 21 hours of labour, the last 3 were with pitocin. She told me in the 100+ births she's been involved with she's only encountered ONE other case where pitocin was given and there were no pain meds involved. Am I just a freak? I thought it might be more common, but I'm guessing not? ?Did anyone else here have pitocin to help with contractions but still not have an epidural or any pain meds? Just curious.?

Re: Am I a freak?

  • I was given pitocin without any pain meds as well.  I was really freaked out about getting an epidural and said that I wanted to go natural.  About an hour after I got to L&D they started the pitocin.  I was already 4cm and having contractions 5min apart.  In the end I ended up with a spinal and a c-section because DS head was too big.  My doctor said at least I was able to experience both natural and c-section childbirth.  If given the option though I think I would have chosen one not both!!

  • No pain meds, but I had pitocen after I delivered dd. As soon as she was out my contractions stopped immediately and I needed the pitocen to help me deliver the placenta. So not exactly the same - but thats the thing with birth - every single one is different. Which means - you aren't a freak. :)
