Preemies

Bottles

What bottles and nipples did you use for your preemie?  I am trying to get things ready for when my DD comes home.  The dr. said their goal is to have her home by Christmas.

Re: Bottles

  • I use Dr. Brown's bottles with the nook nipples from the NICU. They sent me home with a ton of them since he likes those the best. His suck was too strong even for the level 1 nipples at the time which was the slowest flow.

  • We bought several different types and took them to the NICU.  We and the nurses and speech therapist all tried the different types along with different nipples to see which ones she like best.  We left using the Avent bottles with slow flow nipples but they started leaking so we switched to Dr. Brown's with preemie nipples.

  • Dr.Brown's were the only ones that worked for my DS.  We started on stage 1 nipple, but moved up quickly.

  • What a great Xmas present that would be!

We use Dr.Browns and used level 2 nipples.  They told us not to get the preemie nipple because he would get to worn out and would hardly get any.

  • We used the hospital bottles (2 ounce size - the hospital sent us home with a bunch ) but I bought gerber's NUK nipples, level 1 (slow) to use with them.  The stupid nicu nurses told us to use their nipples, which were fast flow latex, so as not to not tire out by daughters, but the milk just spilled everywhere and they weren't getting much nutrition, just coughing and trying to keep up!  (i wasn't thrilled with our nicu nursing).  Our home nurse (use one if it is covered!!) suggested NUK and they were great.  When they moved on to 4 ounces, I bought Playtex drop ins and my girls took to it well. We still use that now, just 8 ounce bottles.
  • We used the hospital bottles until she was drinking more than 2 ounces at a time. We're using Dr Browns now because DD has reflux and these seems to work the best, but she'll drink out of any bottle we've tried.
  • Max has done great with regular old Playtex drop-ins. We used the little 2 oz. hospital bottles until he ate more than 2 oz.

  • We used the Medela bottles.  They are actually sold in packs of 12 and meant for storing breast milk.  The NICU nipples they gave us fit on them, but I also found nipples and rings that were Medela brand that worked well. They are nice b/c they are the same tiny size as the hospital bottles.  It seemed strange to use big bottles with my tiny boys!  Once they took more than 2.5 oz. we switched to the Playtex drop ins.  I'll put the links to the Medela products below...  Good luck!

*I found the rings at a Buy Buy Baby store--they sold them individually, but the ones from the NICU fit too

  • I use Born Free. I could write a love letter about those bottles...if I use a different kind I see a big difference with his reflux, gas etc.
