Nutramagen Formula????

Anyone who is on this formula can you please tell me your experience with it and why you were put on it in the first place (symptoms)? Also, did it work for your baby? Can you also tell me if your insurance company paid for a portion of it...I've heard of ladies on here saying this but am not sure how to go about asking the insurance company or how to file it since it's over the counter? Thanks

Re: Nutramagen Formula????

  • We used Nutramigen for a long time, and are now probably going to go back to it. (Or Alimentum) We started using it because DS was puking all the time, and has confirmed milk allergies.  We also thought at the time he had a soy allergy, but have since decided it's possible we mistook that for his reflux. On the milk he had a rash, and severe vomitting.

Our insurance did not cover Nutramigen, but what you would need to do is actually ask your doctor to write a script for it.  Then you would submit that to ask them for coverage.  Be warned that most doctors will only write the script if there is a medical reason for the use of the formula.  If your DC has a milk allergy, that would need to be documented in order for you to start the process of proving a medical need for the formula.

I don't know that anything "worked" for us since most of DS's problems were reflux related.  The Nutramigen did get rid of the rash though, so that was nice.

  • We switched to Nutramigen because DD was having very painful gas daily.  The gas went away in 36 hours of switching.  The only problem is that it can cause a bit of reflux since it's so thin.  We give her Zantac and add rice cereal to her bottle to solve that.  She's doing well now.  Our insurance wouldn't cover it because it's over the counter :-(
  • We put DS on Nutramigen when he was six weeks old.  He was having horrible gas pains and also green mucousy poop.  After 48 hours he was so much better.  He was longer straining to poop or pass gas and was just overall happier.  Unfortunately both my husbands and my insurance would not cover formula.  Good luck.
