making your own pureed peas

we had to throw out the batch anyway b/c DH somehow ground a piece of plastic in the food processor, but before we did so, I noticed that the peas weren't quite smooth enough for DD anyway. Before I try again, I'd like to know: what did I do wrong? I used frozen peas and we added some of the water we used for steaming to the processor. Should I have shelled them?

Re: making your own pureed peas

  • I'd love an answer to this too. I used frozen ones and no matter how long I processed them they just would not get smooth. I still tried to feed them to DS and he couldn't stop gagging.

  • We've done it two ways.  One way was with a Kidco food mill that helped strain out all a lot of the bits and pieces making them a little smoother, then I added water to that.  Now that he's down with the chunky thicker stuff, we just puree in the food processor.  I found that the mill did make them much finer, but still not as smooth as say jarrred peas.  Maybe if you cook them longer in water to make them really soggy?
  • I strained peas after pureeing before freezing (through a metal mesh strainer I got at the dollar store). Made them super smooth, but you lose a lot so you have to make more to begin with.
  • I skipped puree peas and used them as a finger food when she was ready.  I used other veggies and fruits for purees.
My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • I use a mesh strainer on green beans and peas.  It's not as much work as I thought it would be, but it is an extra step.  And you do lose some, but it's mostly the skins.
