Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Okay, how old is too old for pacifier, in your opinion?

Just curious as to when you plan on taking your dc off the pacifier.

  • my cousin's kid is 3 and still sucking on it all the time.  especially when she's nervous/shy.  that is WAY too old IMO.

  • By two, or if he's talking then before two
  • 2 years old.

There this place nearby that will actually stuff a bear with all your DC's binkies. My niece calls it her "binkie bear". Made for a smooth transition.

  • I started to wean ds off of a binkie around 2. I on the other hand sucked my thumb until I was 11! (can't take thumbs away Yes)!

  • My DD stopped on her own at 3 months.  I didn't plan on stopping her that soon, but she is no longer interested in it like she was when she was a newborn.
  • DD1 was cut off during the day around a year.  She uses one to fall asleep now and I'm ok with that.  With a new baby and soon a transition to a big girl bed I'm in no rush to add any more change to her routine.

  • DD never really liked a paci and will only take one now to chew on because she's teething and she chews on everything that goes in her mouth. So I'm thinking I won't have to worry about this. I think anything over 1 year is too old.
  • I plan on keeping it in her bed for as long as she needs it. but outside in public? 18 months.
  • Evan is almost 3 and still has his at night and if he's having a hard day (immunizations, etc). I don't really mind. He has a few delays and some sensitivity issues so having his soother makes him better during hard times and at night - then it's totally okay with me. Not a battle worth fighting with my particular child, really.

I'm going to take it as it goes with Abby too. She's 4 months and still has it to sleep but never has it any other time of the day/night. As soon as she's drifting off, she pops it out of her mouth herself and just holds it...lol

  • We took DD#1's away when she was 1 1/2.

I take more of an issue when I see kids talking with them in their mouth. I don't like that at all.

In general, I think 2 is probably the absolute latest I would ever go. 1 1/2 was longer, even, than I wanted to.

  • DD wasn't really interested up until about a few days ago.  Not sure why.  Any ideas?  Teething?  As for too old...I would say 1.5yrs-2yrs.  IMO
  • I think start weaning off at 1 yr and aim for 18 months. DS wasn't really interested in it to begin with. I gave it to him from birth and took it away around 1 month.

  • DD stopped using hers at 6mos, DS doesn't care for it so far. My nephew was 18mos. I think however long they need it is different for each child. My friends daughter was 3yrs old before she stopped using it.

  • Our pedi said that he prefers parents to take them away by 6 months but would rather have kids suck on that than their hands.
  • DD stopped taking her paci at 3 months, so I do not have anything to worry about.  However, if she was still taking it, I would not have let her keep it longer than a year.  My sister actually started weaning her children at 6 months.  By a year, they were all off the pacifier and the bottle.  I saw a 3+ year old girl sucking on a paci while having a conversation with her mother.  The first thing that came to mind is that her mom needs to take that dayum pacifier from her!

  • 2 years old, but our daycare won't let you bring one in after they move to the 1 yr old room.
