Babies: 9 - 12 Months

weaning from pacifier or swaddle?

I am in pacifier hell.  DS is 5 months old and we have to go in 8-11 times a night to put it back in.  He's not hungry - tried feeding him several nights and it still happens.  He's also swaddled.  Some nights he'll sleep without it, but has a hard time winding down.

So I was wondering if anyone was able to successfully wean from the pacifier and at what age?

Would you try to wean from pacifier (break suck to sleep association) or wean from swaddle and teach him to suck his thumb or something?

I have the No Cry Sleep Solution and have tried her method for pacifier weaning with no luck.  CIO is not an option for us.

Re: weaning from pacifier or swaddle?

  • i don't really have any advice, but what I can say is that when we weaned dd from the swaddle, she stopped taking the paci and actually started sucking her fingers. ?it is not something I taught her or anything . . maybe you can try to wean from the swaddle and see what he does at that time. ?

  • I haven't swaddled since she started breaking loose around 4 weeks so I can't help you there. My DD does do the paci thing and it drove us crazy for a while but now she will cry maybe once at night if that. We are going to try to break the paci during the day after our Christmas trip when we are home and break it at night last. I am not stressing about it but want her to be done by 12 months.

  • Thanks.  That's what we were hoping would happen because he sucks his fingers/thumbs/burp rags/stuffed animals all day long.  But when he's really upset, only the pacifier works.

  • We weaned from the swaddle around 3 months, because she got to a point where she could not take it anymore!  We just went cold turkey.  As for the pacifier thing we are on day one of no pacifier, and yet again we are going cold turkey.  I would definatly do one thing at a time, maybe the swaddle first, because your DC is at an age where they can put their own pacifier back in!  We are weaning now because DD is not really all that dependent on it, but while she still had it she would look for it in her crib and put it back in her own mouth.  We also always had two or three in her crib for her to "find" in case she lost it!

  • 5 months is pretty young for weening from paci.  Our baby lost interest in the swaddle at around 7 months ... and we used the swaddle EVERY night before then.  Do you have it on a tether? Our baby learned to put it in her mouth around that age.  Maybe you can attach it to her pj's?  We also kept her in our room until 6 months- to make it eaiser on us for the ovenight wake-ups.
My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • We went cold turkey with the swaddle and with the pacifier I give it to DD when she first goes to bed, but if she drops it, we figure she is older (like your DC) to find it and put it back in. There are times that my DD drops it our of the Crib and I can hear it hit the Floor (hardwood) but I just let it be until morning, she does just fine. I don't if this is any help, but good luck.

I would not attach anything to your DC if they are in bed!  That is a safety hazard!

  • We swaddled until about 6 months.  She broke out of it so much that we were able to slowly wean after a week.   We went through the pacifier-dropping-phase too.  All I can tell you is that around 6 months, we started to put her down awake so that she learned to put herself to sleep.  That helped immensely with the pacifier dropping problem   Now she just finds it and puts it back in her mouth at night if she wants it.   Good luck! It will get better.
