Name Length

Do you think it matters if siblings have names similiar in length?  DS is named Ian Carl Lastname.  So his full name is very short.  Top of my list right now is Elizabeth for DD.  DH likes it but he thinks it's long and because DS's name is so short we should give her a short name also.  I would give her a short middle name if that matters at all (probably Ann.)

Re: Name Length

  • I would never think to even consider that!

It's funny how differently people think about names...DD is Keira Evelyn, and DC#2 will be Raina Elizabeth or Evan Gregory.  We've heard some people say that Keira/Raina go great together, and others that they're too similar b/c they have the same number of syllables and end in "-a."  My mom thinks Evan is funny b/c DD's mn is Evelyn, and joked that we should make it Evan Keiralyn so their names are the reverse of each other (LOL).  We have friends with DD's named Sadie and Delaney, which I guess do sound pretty similar, but I never thought it was odd or even noticed until I started obsessing about what does and doesn't matter in sibling names!

Anyway, I think Ian and Elizabeth are fine together.  The only thing I really think is weird with sibling names is when one name is WAY common/trendy and the other name is SUPER unusual...like our friends, who have sons named Aidan and Mars.  But, even that doesn't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

  • I dont even think about whether my kids names will match or not, in length or sound.  I just pick out names I love and go from there.

  • I don't think it matters at all. DD1's name is Addison and our number one name for DD2 is Reese so a little shorter. Go with what you like. I think Carl and Elizabeth sound fine together...
