Potty training pants

What did you do when DC was trying to learn to pull pants up and down on their own? I can send Ethan to the bathroom by himself to pee, but he can't do buttons/zippers on jeans yet. I sent DH to Walmart to buy cheap sweats for home, but he can't wear them always. When did your kid learn to do regular pants by themselves?

Re: Potty training pants

  • Hmm....I have never thought much about this because my DD always wore stretch pants when PT'ing.  They don't really make those for boys, huh?!?  Honestly, I'd keep him in anything that he doesn't have to do buttons/zippers.  My 4yo still would have a hard time w/that so even her jeans I make sure are loose enough in the waist for her to easily pull up & down...
  • Dresses.  Sorry, I'm not sure you would want to do that with E, but it is sooo much easier :-)  I would just look for elastic pants for now or jeans with enough elastic in the back that he doesn't have to undo the buttons if he can.

  • Could you have him wear regular pants but do the pregnancy rubber band-through-the-buttonhole trick? That way he could still get the pants down.

  • Ha!  My DD has no butt, so she pulls jeans off (not so much on).  She usually is wearing a dress and tights, so it is really a non issue.
  • He can't undo them, or he can't redo them? Mine could all undo them, and I buttoned/zipped when I made sure they washed their hands, or when they came out if necessary. I think they were all almost 3 when they could do it on their own, although my 31/2 y/o daycare boy still can't so I just do it when he's done.

  • Ds just slides his pants right down off of his skinny butt without unbuttoning them at all. However, back when he was first learning to use the toilet I did mostly keep him in sweatpants and other elastic waisted pants. This is a good time to stock up on Gymboree fleece pants since they're on sale right now!
