Info/experience with MoMo twins?

So my pg-with-twins friend had her US on Tuesday and they told her there's a pretty good chance that her twins share one sac. She was NOT comforted by what she found online regarding MoMo twins (monochorionic/monoamniotic, but I guess you wouldn't need that info if you were offering your advice on this post). She's got another US on Dec. 22nd but was freaking out today and needs some kind of advice, comfort, something to help her get through the next 3 weeks until they can say for sure whether or not those babies are in the same sac and share the same 50% mortality rate. What can I tell her?

 TIA

Re: Info/experience with MoMo twins?

  • How far along is she? It can take a while to find a seperating membrane. I know we didn't see our membrane for a looong time- up into the 16-18w mark. But, DO NOT tell her not to worry, there is a lot of bad shit that can happen with mo-mo twins, she can't help worring. Just tell her that no matter what happens, you will be there for her.

  • you'll find that a lot of us on here with IDs went through the "are they momo?" situation. only a couple of moms here (sweater is the most prolific poster) actually had momo twins. the 50% mortality rate is outdated.

anyway, if her u/s was really early, it might just be too soon to see it. it's best seen at around 12 weeks.

  • DItto what PP have said. At my first u/s I was told that they could not see a membrane. I forget how far along I was, but it did take a few more u/s's until they found our membrane. I came home and totally freaked myself out reading stuff online about momo twins. Pea-kay is correct though, the 50% mortality rate is very outdated now.  Best of luck to your friend.
  • Hi there.  I am one of the few on this board who had MoMo twins.  Sweater and Hoodie are the only others on here that I know of.  The good news is that all three of us beat the odds of this condition and we each have both of our babies.  The others are right in that this condition is highly misdiagnosed and that there is a very good chance that they'll still find the seperating membrane (I wasn't officially diagnosed with MoMo twins until week 16).  Nonetheless, it is a very scary ordeal to go through.  If your friend has any specific questions, please let her know she is more than welcome to email me - audreytx3atyahoodotcom.
